Shout Out: Thank You • Peer Support. Thank you for bringing us peer support; it is essential to help us cope with our future. • Recovery. Thank you for bringing us recovery; it defines a critical goal for health reform. • Resiliency. Thank you for bringing us resiliency; it defines an exceptional new opportunity.
The New Will Be Very Different • Peers will be working in health homes, not in separated specialty settings. • Peers also will be engaged in disease prevention and health promotion activities. • Peers will be working directly with communities and populations, not just individual people. • Peers will be emerging leaders in many different roles.
Steps On the Way to the New • Help uninsured persons become insured, wherever they are. • Help the separated mental health and substance usesystemsget linked with primary care. • Help move our new agenda to prevention, promotion, and wellbeing. • Learn the important new roles that peers will have; these roles include both advocacy and businessopportunities.
Help People Become Insured • Reach out to uninsured persons and get them linked to an insurance navigator, an enrollment assister, and/or a federally qualified health center. • Train our specialty providers to be more effective at this type of outreach.
Help People Become Insured • PEER OPPORTUNITIES: • Advocate for the State Medicaid Expansion • Advocate for the Essential Health Benefit • Create a State Coalition for Whole Health
Help Systems Become Linked • Link mental health and substance use programs with primary care programs. Peers have great potential to work in health homes to deliver needed careto clients who have physical illnesses, but no behavioral health conditions. • Create the political environment for communities and counties to develop public collaboratives that will foster health homes. • Be very bold: Propose a peer-operated health home.
Help Systems Become Linked • PEER OPPORTUNITIES: • Provide technical assistance to State governments and to Qualified Health Plans on Peer Services in Health Homes • Offer Peer Services for Health Homes to Qualified Health Plans • Build COSP Health Homes and the Accountable Care Organizations to operate them.
Learn Important New Roles • Peers have great potential to implement disease prevention and health promotion interventions in health homes, in public health programs, and in communities.
