University CentersThe First Survey Fred Baus, University Center of Greenville Catherine Watt, Clemson University
Survey • Why? • Who? Database built of 64 organizations that stated their interest – 42 responded • When? This past summer – a first ever survey of centers • What? Web-based survey to obtain first layer information on organization, funding, enrollment, and services offered.
Structure • Range in founding dates, including 13 since 2000 tell us that centers remain an option for states • Total institutions who are part of centers – • Maximum is 24 institutions, average 7.8
Employees • We tried to break down the center employees compared with those coming from the participating institutions – excluding instructors: • Directors’ responsibilities and titles varied as well…. Mostly related to the center’s position in the state budget
Funding • Not the best year to ask about funding, so we’ll continue to look for trends • See Excel table – • Surprising low number of local revenue participants • Interesting set of corporate participants • We need to do more to analyze relationships that have occurred over time
Future Research • Can we inform the idea of “best practices” in a group so diverse? • Organization – state status, CEO/Director position, why institutions participate • Enrollment – increasing online programs, corporate training, business relationships • Funding – effects of budget cuts, endowments, differential fees by institution • Services – does cost effectiveness balance with types of services offered at centers?
