  2. Government – set of a rules and laws that rulers use to run a country • A political system • Anarchy – no government • No rules • Everyone does whatever they want

  3. Theocracy – power is held by a religious leader • Ex. Taliban • Islamic Mullahs

  4. One-party state – all power in the country is held by one political party • Ex. China and Cuba

  5. Absolute Monarchy – power held by a king or queen • meant power and affluence for the rich, clergy and nobles • while no privileges and rights were almost guaranteed for the poor. • Divine Right – power came from God Louis XVI

  6. Dictatorship – ruled by a single ruler • Gains power by force or military

  7. Military government – army seizes power from a weak government. • Power held by one or more military

  8. Multiparty Democracy – people are given the choice to elect candidates from several parties. • Constitutional monarchy • Presidential republic

  9. Constitutional monarchy – royal family “figure head” • Represents country for social duties/diplomatic • No real power to make laws • Prime minister – real power rules Parliament • Parliament – ruling body Queen Elizabeth II David Cameron

  10. Presidential Republic – voters choose leader and elect people to parliament or Congress • Leader: president or prime minister • Most common form of government in world

  11. Dependent territory – areas in world too small or too weak to govern itself • Larger country governs it. British Virgin Islands
