How did John Adams’ election demonstrate sectionalism? Southerners voted for Jefferson Northerners voted for Adams
XYZ Affair What country was Adams negotiating with? The French! Why? Because the French were harassing American ships!
What happpened? How did the French respond to the American’s desire to meet? They sent a letter requesting a bribe of $250,000 in order to meet. What did Adams do? Released the letter to the public, changing the French names to XYZ
Why did he do that? To gain support for War with France if it came to that. What was the Outcome? The French backed down and negotiated.
