  2. Meet the Phylum Platypus Possum My many spots make me one of a kind. I’m very daring. You can date me, if you can catch me. I may be awkward looking, but I have a great personality and love to swim around. My beady eyes may scare you, but I observe everything and my large ears make me a great listener. Cheetah

Habitat and Needs • Mammals are found in all types of habitats • Prototherias: • Terrestrial: deserts, sandy plains, rocky areas, and forests • Aquatic: lakes ponds, and streams, however only primary • Metatherias: • Wide variety: deserts, scrubland, tropical rainforests • Mostly terrestrial • Adapted to many different niches • Eutherias: • Wide variety • Aquatic (whales, dolphins) • Terrestrial

  4. Pastimes and Activities • Frolicking in meadows and grasslands • Showing off with flips and dives in the water • Competing with my friends • Learning how to adapt and succeed in life

  5. Genealogy • Mammals have extra openings behind the eyes, distinguishing mammals from not as advanced synapsids. These openings allowed for a stronger jaw. • Three bones in the mammalian ear, the stapes, the incus, and the malleus, evolved from the jaw to the ear, aiding hearing.

  6. Unique Features • Mammary glands • Single bone jaw • Main artery leaving the heart curves left • Diaphragm • Bucal Cavity* • Placenta* • Endothermic* *= not common to all mammals BE UNIQUE

  7. The Ideal Mate • The ideal mate is one who can live in any type of habitat and can adapt to its surroundings. • Is up for anything. • Likes to compete. • Will be loyal.
