  1. Transistors can be used For amplification or as a switching circuit. They were developed as a replacement for the Vacuum Tube The switching Transistor is At the heart of many modern Electronic circuits including The computer William Shockley The TransistorThe invention that changed the worldandOne of It’s Inventors, William Schockley Shockley co-invented the first transistor . He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1956. His research explained exactly how a Transistor worked at the molecular level. The First Silicon Transistor produced by Texas Instruments in 1954 As a switch, the Transistor can be used to manipulate the 1’s and 0’s used in computers As an amplifier, the Transistor can boost a small signal to very large signal. Shockley is credited for giving birth to the “Silicon Valley” area in California. Shockley was also a avid mountaineer and pioneered several new climbing Routes in the “Gunk's”. Simple circuit for a Transistor. • Three Transistors on a single chip. One of the first integrated • circuits used in the IBM 360 Computer in 1964. An integrated • circuit this size can now hold millions of transistors. Bill Shockley and Charles Kittel climbing in the Watchung Reservation in New Jersey. Modern Transistors
