OHIO INVENTORS 4th Grade Social Studies Ohio History
OBJECTIVES • Given supplies, students will be able to design and create a prototype of an invention to better understand the creative process of inventions. • Given background on the Wright Brothers, Charles Kettering, Garrett Morgan, Granville Woods and Thomas Edison students will be able to work together in groups to produce a written and oral report about a selected inventor and their inventions. • Given the background on these inventors, students will be able to develop a timeline detailing when the inventions occurred in Ohio history. • After completing all activities, students will demonstrate what they have learned by completing a matching worksheet.
MATERIALS • Computer • Paper plates, crayons, colored pencils, markers, scissors • Inventor research sheet • Ohio inventors timeline • Ohio inventors matching worksheet
STUDENT ACTIVITIES • Students will be introduced to inventions with background stories and examples of earmuffs, adhesive bandages, Lifesavers candy, and a Frisbee • Students will make a prototype of their own inventions from paper plates, write a sales pitch for the invention and then share it with the class • Students will learn about Ohio inventors the Wright Brothers, Charles Kettering, Garrett Morgan, Granville Woods, and Thomas Edison by watching PowerPoint • Students will choose one inventor and working in groups will prepare a written report based on information found in websites provided in the PowerPoint and by using inventor research sheet as a guide • Groups will make oral reports to the class about their chosen inventor • Class will create a timeline of these inventors after listening to everyone’s reports • Students will complete a matching worksheet
WEBSITES • Following is an interactive PowerPoint presentation for students • Websites included are: http://www.hfmgv.org/exhibits/wright/ http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=223 http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=278 http://www.oplin.org/famousohioans/inventors/puzzler.html#person6 http://www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/edison.htm http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blgreenwood.htm http://inventors.about.com/od/bstartinventions/a/bandaid.htm http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bllifesavers.htm
INVENTORS AND THEIR INVENTIONS • Inventors are often ordinary people who follow through with their creative ideas to make their dreams a reality(Click pictures) • Chester Greenwood’s Earmuffs • Earle Dickson’s Adhesive Bandage • Clarence Crane’s Lifesavers
YOU BE THE INVENTOR • Use paper plate, crayons, colored pencils, markers to invent a prototype (model) of an invention that will solve a problem or be useful to others • Write a sales pitch for the invention on an index card • Share your invention with the class
OHIO INVENTORS • You have heard about some inventors and their inventions • You have created a prototype of your own invention • Now let’s learn about some Ohio inventors and their inventions
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS • Lived in Dayton, Ohio • First in airplane flight • First successful flight of a powered airplane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903 (Click on photo of Orville and Wilbur to learn more) Return
CHARLES KETTERING • Born near Loudenville, Ohio on Aug. 29, 1876 • Later moved to Dayton • Invented the electric cash register while working at NCR (National Cash Register) • Founded Delco • Invented electric engine starter for cars (Click on photo of Charles Kettering for more information) Return
GARRETT MORGAN • Born on March 4, 1877 in Kentucky • Lived in Cincinnati and later Cleveland • Invented the stoplight • Also invented the gasmask (Click on Morgan’s photo to learn more) Return
GRANVILLE WOODS • Born on April 23, 1856 in Columbus, Ohio • Invented overhead electric train wires • Invented train telegraph service (Click on photo of Granville Woods for more information) Return

RESEARCH AND REPORT • Choose one of the Ohio inventors (Wright Brothers, Charles Kettering, Garrett Morgan, Granville Woods, or Thomas Edison) and form groups based on selection • Research the inventor from the website provided in the PowerPoint and prepare a one page written report that includes a picture of one of the inventions (use the research sheet on the next slide as a guide) • As a group, present your inventor to the class, telling something about the inventor and what he invented
INVENTOR RESEARCH SHEET(Answer the following questions.) • Who is your inventor? • When was he born? • Where in Ohio did he live? • What did he like to do as a child or young man? • What kind of work did he do as an adult? • What did he invent? (Can name more than one invention) • Why was his invention important?
CREATE A TIMELINE • After group oral reports about Ohio inventors, let’s prepare a timeline about the inventors showing when their inventions were created using the timeline on the following slide:
OHIO INVENTORS TIMELINE Write dates for each event in time order from bottom to top. Add details along the line.
a. Garrett Morgan b. Thomas Edison c. Wright Brothers d. Charles Kettering e.
