CONSUMER VISION CARE Products Alcon is the largest manufacturer of contact lens care products in the world and is widely known for its artificial tears for dry eye therapy and eye vitamins to help protect eye health. While we manufacture and sell dozens of eye care products around the globe, some of our more widely used products are highlighted here.

  6. Research and Development • Our financial commitment to research and development surpasses all others in the eye care industry. Annually we invest up to 17 percent of our pharmaceutical revenue and nearly 10 percent of our overall revenue back into research efforts totaling US$3 billion over the last five years. This investment will grow to at least US$3 billion over the next five years. To put this in perspective, we invest more in research and development than any other eye care company worldwide. • Our R&D organization is driven by nearly 1800 dedicated researchers, scientists, engineers and support staff located in five state of the art facilities in the United States and Europe. Alcon's R&D organization includes hundreds of individuals who are either M.D.s, doctors of optometry or Ph.D.s and have extensive experience in the fields of ophthalmologic and optometric science. • Manufacturing • Alcon employs approximately 5,800 individuals to manufacture our products at 15 plants around the world. We organize our manufacturing facilities along product categories, with most plants primarily dedicated to manufacturing either surgical equipment and devices or pharmaceutical and contact care lens products. Our functional division of plants reflects the unique technical skills required of employees in these two manufacturing environments as well as the differences in regulatory requirements governing the production of surgical devices and pharmaceuticals. • We operate a continuous improvement program that involves activities such as quality improvements and cycle-time reductions. Alcon also makes sure to maintain Good manufacturing processes through year-round training of our direct labor manufacturing staff. Our professional employees are trained in various aspects of management, regulatory and technical issues through a combination of in-house seminars, local university classes and trade meetings. • Sales • Alcon is deeply committed to developing strong relationships with customers. We are not successful unless physicians and patients are successful in achieving the best possible outcomes. Our relationship philosophy is a direct result of this realization. This philosophy begins with identifying and meeting customer needs, and develops into coaching health care providers in the use of our products and providing additional educational resources so they can provide their patients with the best care. • As a result, Alcon is present in every significant market in the world where ophthalmology is practiced and, currently, our products are sold in more than 180 countries. We conduct our sales and marketing activities through more than 75 offices around the world. • Every member of our global sales team undergoes rigorous training on all major eye conditions and treatments with special attention on surgical systems and devices or pharmaceutical and consumer vision care products. Additionally, our sales force provides Alcon's customers with access to clinical education programs technical service assistance, practice management programs and surgical training sites located around the world. 7. MISSION Alcon has one mission: To discover and develop innovative eye care products that improve the quality of life by helping people see better. We accomplish this by partnering with eye care professionals around the world to advance the treatment of eye disease and help people experience the best vision possible. We are guided by a core set of values that have changed little over Alcon's history. We are committed to conducting all of our business activities to the highest ethical and legal standards and are committed to quality and continuous improvement in everything we do – from exceeding regulatory standards for sterilization in manufacturing environments to surpassing government expectations for safety and efficacy of our products. There isn't an Alcon employee anywhere in the world who isn't willing to go one more step to make each product that much better.

  8. Quality Control • Our core mission is to enhance, preserve and restore vision. We endeavor to research, develop, manufacture, distribute and service products that not only satisfy the needs of our customers but also offer new technologies and therapeutic approaches. We strive to increase our sales and market shares across all major product categories and geographic regions and deliver superior financial results. We consider quality to be more than conformance to product specifications and seek to continually improve all aspects of our business processes and quality management systems. At Alcon, we recognize the integral nature of the regulatory framework to our business systems. We comply with the highest level of regulatory and statutory requirements. These standards are consistently adhered to in each market. Our business ethics are solidly based upon mutual trust and integrity and focused upon continual improvement. Every member of the Alcon team is responsible and accountable for ensuring that their objectives are aligned with this policy. • Research and Development • For Alcon, product quality is more than complying to specifications – it's the culmination of many people's efforts throughout the development and production of a product through the provision of service for that product. From Research & Development to Manufacturing, everyone plays a pivotal role. When each individual performs their job to the highest level, the final outcome will be a quality product. Beginning with the CEO, anyone and everyone at Alcon is an overseer of quality. This results in employees taking pride in the standard they hold their own work to – providing patients and physicians with a product or service that sets the standard within the industry and redefines its own standard with each new product introduction and enhancement.Beyond our own internal quality standards, Alcon is dedicated to complying with standards set by specific regulatory bodies around the world, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Union (EU). Alcon currently adheres to the ISO 9001:2000 standard for general quality, the ISO 15378:2006 for pharmaceuticals and the ISO 13485:2003 for surgical devices. These standards, in conjunction with our use of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Quality Systems (QS) Regulation, ensure that all products are consistently meeting the customers and regulatory bodies expectations. Commitment to client satisfaction

  9. Animal Use • As the leading researcher and manufacturer of eye health and eye care products, Alcon is committed to preserving, enhancing and restoring the vision of patients who use our products. With this commitment comes the responsibility of comprehensive testing of all our products to ensure their safety. Most of our products help combat diseases of the eye that can lead to blindness. As such, regulatory health agencies around the world require many types of tests to ensure the accuracy of our findings and the quality of our products and to ensure safety and efficacy before granting permission for their use in humans. When these tests require the use of animals, Alcon observes guidance from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), through which we are accredited, and follows the internationally accepted principles for humane animal use in research – the three "R"s.Replacement – Replace tests with non-animal testing methods wherever appropriate.Alcon extensively tests all new products using non-animal laboratory procedures and limits animal testing to only that required to secure regulatory approval of new products.Reduction – Reduce the number of animals used in each study.Alcon actively explores other testing methods first, to ensure that as few animals as possible are used in our testing.Refinement – Refine testing to use the least invasive and painful method feasible.Alcon testing is rigorously designed to limit pain and invasiveness of testing procedures. At Alcon, we believe there is a fourth "R" – Respect. Here animals are treated with the utmost respect, care and scrupulous attention to their welfare. Our veterinarians on staff ensure that animals at Alcon are treated with compassion and great concern for their comfort and psychological well being through various enrichment programs and are monitored throughout the day for health and well being. We take pride that through many unannounced inspections by veterinarians representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, the AAALAC and our accreditation, Alcon has always received exemplary ratings. We are also frequently commended on conditions of our facility, quality of animal care and their overall health. The FutureAlcon supports initiatives that reduce the necessity of animal testing such as the international harmonization of toxicity introduced by the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), which reduced three similar tests needed for product approval in the U.S., Japan and the EU to one. However, as long as animal testing is required, Alcon will continue to operate to the highest standards of quality in our use and treatment of these animals. Animal Use

  11. Employee Training • By investing in our employees' development and training, we are investing in the future – thus Alcon has continually increased training resources, most recently broadening our Global Learning and Development function. This recently-expanded group demonstrates Alcon's commitment to employee development and works to align training initiatives with Alcon business objectives and employee performance. The goal – to ensure that we meet future challenges as Alcon grows and expands by helping employees develop and grow. • It Starts with Good Training • Our global sales force does more than sell products; they help physicians provide a better level of care for their patients. They do this by establishing a relationship that allows them to inquire, advise and instruct – setting the stage for a collaborative exchange that can provide excellent results for physician, patient and sales person. But first, the sales person must go through a three-level process of instruction and mentoring. From ophthalmology basics to operative techniques, a candidate must master each training level before proceeding further in the process. As a result our sales people often find themselves accompanying physicians into the operating room as consultants to effectively demonstrate the use of the product, train the physician on the use of equipment, or share the latest techniques – something that many doctors appreciate as the Alcon difference. 15. TEARS Naturale FORTE Tears Naturale FORTE Tears Naturale® Forte unique Trisorb® technology contains 3 ingredients that work together to lock in moisture to bring long-lasting relief to dry eyes. Because these tears are closest to natural tears, they provide better "wettability," and slow evaporation of the tear film. And, unlike many other brands, Tears Naturale® Forte doesn't contain harsh preservatives. Instead, it contains Polyquad®, recognized by doctors as being one of the most gentle preservatives, even for very sensitive eyes. 18. USES • Dry eye is a term used to describe a group of different diseases and conditions that result from inadequate wetting and lubrication of the eye. • Although millions of people experience it, dry eye is not always easy to diagnose; it can easily be mistaken for other conditions such as infections or allergies. • Believe it or not, excessive tearing caused by crying, cold weather, etc., can actually cause dry eye symptoms. • There are many different abnormalities that can cause dry eye, such as decreased tear production, excessive evaporation, blinking problems, etc. Many medications, such as antihistamines, can also contribute to dry eye. • Dry Eye • There is no known "cure" for dry eye. However, in most cases, dry eye can be treated with an artificial tear solution or, in more severe cases, by blocking the puncta. Whatever the treatment mode chosen, effective treatment of dry eye must either replace or enhance natural tears. • To replace natural tears, an artificial tear solution can be effective. Artificial tears are available with and without preservatives. Preservative-free artificial tears are recommended for people who can't tolerate preservatives or who must use these solutions many times per day. • If artificial tears are needed on more than an occasional basis, the type of preservative used is an important consideration. Many artificial tear solutions contain benzalkonium chloride (BAC), a preservative that with frequent use can actually damage the epithelium and lead to further problems. A better choice is a solution with Polyquad® preservative, so gentle that even people with the most sensitive eyes can use it. • To enhance natural tears, a more advanced artificial tear is required. Such solutions would include artificial tears with formulations containing zinc and bicarbonate, substances that can actually contribute to the growth and maintenance of healthy mucin, tear film, and epithelium. Often, overnight protection is needed. In these cases a more viscous preparation should be used, one that is designed to provide long-lasting protection and lubrication. USES

  19. Demand Demand Alcon has remained the leading artificial tear brand in the US. study from Journal of Medicine

  20. Patients • Age – dry eye is a part of the natural aging process. The majority of people over age 65 experience some symptoms of dry eyes. • Gender – women are more likely to develop dry eyes due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, and menopause. • Medications – certain medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications and antidepressants, can reduce the amount of tears produced in the eyes. • Medical conditions – persons with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and thyroid problems are more likely to have symptoms of dry eyes. Also, problems with inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), inflammation of the surfaces of the eye, or the inward or outward turning of eyelids can cause dry eyes to develop. • Environmental conditions – exposure to smoke, wind and dry climates can increase tear evaporation resulting in dry eye symptoms. Failure to blink regularly, such as when staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, can also contribute to drying of the eyes. • Other factors – long term use of contact lenses can be a factor in the development of dry eyes. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK, can cause decreased tear production and dry eyes. Patients
