A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Best News Ever Heard • Why is the resurrection of Jesus the best news the world has ever heard? • Because it is true! • Evidence of the narratives • Evidence of the empty tomb • Evidence of the change of worship day • Because it came after an apparent defeat! • Because of all that it proves!

Romans 1:1-4 (ESV) 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2  which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3  concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4  and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • What did Jesus mean by “Shalom”? • Never used in a flippant manner • It is a serious greeting, not “hello.” • Always related in some measure to the thought of peace being God’s gift • The New Testament thought of God’s peace is always connected to Jesus’ death and resurrection – Romans 5:1.

A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • What is the definition of peace? • A relationship between countries calling it “an agreement to end hostilities” • Another calls it “public order.” • Some call it “harmony in personal relationships.” • These are all applicable, but they don’t do justice to what Jesus really meant.

A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • Jesus was speaking of Peace with God. • This is the peace bought by Jesus’ suffering on the cross. • It is significant because people are not at peace with God outside of Jesus. • Men are at war with God and enemies! • But God made peace through the cross!

  18. Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV) 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • Jesus was speaking of the Peace of God. • Because of peace with God, we also now have the peace of God – Philippians 4:6-7. • To the Jews, this came to mean spiritual health and well-being. • This settles our souls between us and God and, therefore, between each other. • Because of Jesus, we can dwell in the eye of the hurricane.

A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • The Peace of God comes from ….. • Having access to the presence of God through prayer – Romans 5:2. • A sure and certain hope for the future (eternal life) – John 14:2-3. • The gift of the Holy Spirit. • Being adopted sons and daughters of God. • His promise to meet all our needs – Philippians 4:19.

  25. Philippians 4:19 (ESV) 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

  26. A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Peace Be With You • This peace brings about responsibility and a God-given task. • The disciples were not at liberty to keep this peace to themselves. • They were to become Jesus’ messengers.

  27. A Great BequestJohn 20:17-20 Application 2 Have you believed in Jesus as your Savior? Is Jesus your Lord? Have you known and experienced God’s peace so that you can be sold out to be His messenger?
