  12. John 11:1-6 • 1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3So the sisters sent [word] to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

  13. 4But when Jesus heard [this], He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days [longer] in the place where He was.

  14. Why the delay? He was on a divine timetable John 11:9 - Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.”

  15. John 2:4 - And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” John 7:6 - So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.” John 7:8 - “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”

  16. John 7:30 - So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. John 8:20 - These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.

  17. John 12:23 - And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” John 13:1 - Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

  18. Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You.”(John 17:1)

  19. John 11:38-40 • 38So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been [dead] four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

  20. The disciples not only didn’t understand the timing/schedule they didn’t understand the purpose of the visit.

  21. and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.(John 11:15) 4 days gave greater authenticity & built disciple’s faith.

  22. Lessons • If Jesus can do nothing about death, then whatever else He can do amounts to nothing. • The last enemy that will be abolished is death.(I Corinthians 15:19) • Death is man’s last enemy (I Corinthians 15:26), and Jesus has defeated it totally and permanently.

  23. Jesus called for Lazarus – • He didn’t say “come forth” or ALL would have come. • When we come to Jesus we are all still wrapped up in a lot of bad habits. • Teach, baptize, unwrap. He sets us free.
