Energy Efficiency Opportunities Reporting - 2011 • Submitted 5th Public Report for the EEO in 2011 • Used 10.5PJ across 3,241 retail stores, plus Distribution Centres and support offices • Implemented 1,007 projects, saving 424,197GJ per annum • Commenced 1,047 projects, to save 596,558GJ per annum • Planning and investigating a further 181 projects, which could save 80,929GJ • Assessed and rejected 1,277 projects due to long payback periods and minimal savings • Since 2007 Woolworths has invested $66.5 million in energy efficient technology which will save $110.9 million in operational costs by 2015

Project Identification, Evaluation and Implementation • Group Engineering and Systems Support teams consist of 17 experts in areas of refrigeration, HVAC and mechanical, lighting and analysis • Energy efficient and low carbon technology is researched and investigated • Project Evaluation Model assesses whole life cycle costs and benefits of technology, for initial trials and roll outs • Model considers capital costs, energy savings, carbon emission reductions, maintenance impacts, carbon pricing • Conduct in-store trial, metering actual energy use and saving • Results of trial are then used in the model to assess viability of large scale roll out • All projects must meet Woolworths’ standard hurdle rates for capital investment • Project Register used to record the results of completed projects and progress of ongoing projects • Currently 180 projects on the Register
Glass Lids on Island Freezers • Initial trial of installing glass lids on island freezers in 8 stores • Assessed sales pre- and post-installation to ensure no impacts • Committed more than $50K in capital • Positive results, with payback less than 4 years • Reduced carbon emissions by 157 tonnes • Initiative is now a standard component of both new store and refurbishment kits
Project CO2 • Refrigeration retrofit program for existing supermarkets • Consolidates a range of energy efficiency innovation, including • High energy efficiency fans • LED Lighting • Improved anti-fogging on doors • Recommissioning of plant • Glass lids • 180 stores have been retrofitted • Savings include • $2.5M OPEX • 136,254GJ • 35,860 tonnes of CO2-e
Conclusion • You know your business best, have a good look at it and prioritise based on what areas of energy use are material • Trial and test on a small scale to build the business case • Monitor the results of trials and full roll outs • Get external help if you feel you need it, but have clearly defined expectations and deliverables • Questions?
