Kent Low CarbonCommunities Climate Change Communities Networking Event Tuesday 8th December 2009 Lenham Community Centre, Lenham Lucy Breeze KCC Climate Change Project Officer
KCC Climate Change Programme By working with community groups we hope to: • Support community-based energy efficiency initiatives. • Provide communities with the tools to make ‘low-carbon’ lifestyles the norm. • Raise awareness of the likely impacts climate change will have on communities and how these impacts can be reduced. • Encourage groups to share knowledge and experiences. • Make climate change a local issue.
Eastchurch St Margaret’s at Cliffe Hadlow Elham The Kent Low Carbon Communities Initiative The pilot started in 2007 and involved four Kent communities.
Challenge Fund £10,000 prize fund for community-based carbon reduction projects.
Low Carbon Communities Toolkit The toolkit is designed to be used by any active community group who wishes to become a Low Carbon Community. It outlines the steps that you will need to take in order to plan, implement and sustain your project long-term.
Plans For The Future Challenge Fund 2010 • Competition open to any Kent community group wishing to carry out a project that results in energy savings or prepares the community for climate change. Low Carbon Toolkit v.2 • Updating information, making the guide more ‘user-friendly’ and adding case studies and guidance on how to prepare for climate change. Climate Change Conference • An opportunity for Kent community groups to share experiences, hear from other UK groups, and find out about new ideas, support and initiatives.
Community Feedback • How could KCC provide further support to communities working on climate change? • How could we improve the toolkit? • Would you prefer online information or paper based materials? • Would Kent-based case studies be useful? • Where have you come across the most difficulties: • Getting a community project up and running. • Getting support from the wider community. • Maintaining momentum. • Finding additional funding.
