  2. Impetuous (adj.) Definition: Of, pertaining to, or characterized by sudden or rash action; impulsive. Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “It was Prince Bolo who burst into impetuous speech” (90). Other sentence: The impetuous warrior immediately charged forward, but failed to defeat his opponent.

  3. Purloin (v.) Definition: to steal, embezzle, take dishonestly Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “The servants of the Cultmaster purloined her some hours back” (90). Other sentence: In the darkness of the night, several spies broke into the factory and purloined top-secret documents.

  4. Aghast (adj.) Definition: struck with overwhelming shock or amazement; filled with sudden fright or horror Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “Haroun, aghast searched frantically through his bedclothes; but the Disconnector was gone” (113). Other sentence: Commander and soldier alike stood aghast as the enemy tanks ripped through their defenses.

  5. Diminish (v.) Definition: To make or cause to seem smaller, less important, ex; lessen; reduce. Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “They left the Lagoon, and Gup City was diminishing behind them” (116). Other sentence: Inequality in the Beatles was apparent as John and Paul diminished George’s contributions.

  6. Tirade (n.) Definition:A prolonged, angry outburst Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “The old General seemed perfectly happy to listen to these tirades of insults and insubordination without batting an eyelid” (119). Other sentence: Chris burst out into a lengthy tirade about censorship, restrictions and other related topics.

  7. Irreparably (adv.) Definition: Not reparable; incapable of being rectified or made good. Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “It was a suicidal mission; they would be defeated, Batcheat would perish, and the Ocean would be irreparably ruined” (121). Other sentence: The violence of the earthquake caused irreparable damage to the city.

  8. Vivacity (n.) Definition: liveliness; animation; sprightliness Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “It was in those colors that the best parts of the Stories were encoded: vividness, lightness and vivacity” (122). Other sentence: Everyone was astounded by the vivacity of the singer on stage.

  9. Reprimand (n.) Definition: A harsh scolding, especially a formal one by a person in authority. Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: “Blabbermouth looked delighted at this reprimand; Bolo looked murderous, but held his tongue” (134). Other sentence: Students who misbehaved in class were given a stern reprimand.

  10. Obliterate (v.) Definition: to remove or destroy all traces of; do away with; destroy completely Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: The thick, dark poison was everywhere now, obliterating the colors of the Streams of Story” (146). Other sentence: Despite its immense power, the Death Star was unable to completely obliterate Alderaan, as it left behind chunks of rock.

  11. Morose (adj.) Definition: gloomily and suddenly ill-humored, as a person or mood Sentence from Haroun and the Sea of Stories: ““It must be a mile long!” he exclaimed. “Outside, super-colossal, big,” Iff morosely agreed.” (151). Other sentence: At the memorial service, the atmosphere was morose.
