The Noble Eightfold Path What is it? • One of the principle teachings • Fourth of the four noble truths • Must be done together – fold • 8 different steps • Represented by dharma wheel
Importance to Buddhism • Leads to cessation of suffering Eradicate greed, hatred & delusion • Achievement of self-enlightenment, nirvana
1 . The Right view • Guidance in life • Beginning and end of path • The cognitive aspect of wisdom • Buddhists must refer to doctrine of the four noble truths • Example: As teenagers, it is important to steer yourself away from drugs and bad influences in order to achieve your goals.
2. Right Thought/Intention • Buddha distinguishes 3 types of intentions • Mind must be free from desire, ill-will and cruelty • Described as commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement • Must nurture good thoughts because they produce strong characters • Example: if something goes wrong, think positively. Don't be jealous of others, and never wish bad things upon anyone.
F*** 3. Right Speech Dumb*** “omg did you hear when she …” C*** • Do not lie • Do not criticize unjustly • No harsh language • No gossiping • Example: no swearing, be honest, don't talk behind others' backs and watch the way you speak to elders and authority figures Stupid b****
4. Right Conduct/Right Action must observe the Five Precepts Do not harm others Do not cheat, lie or steal Do not participate in sexual misconduct Example: follow the law, participate in volunteer work, offer your help to others when they need it
5. Right Livelihood • Earning a living through occupations that do not cause harm to living things • Avoid butchering of animals, lending money at high interests, trade of weapons, liquor or poison • Example: getting a job that is well-recognized and respected in the community, such as a teacher, doctor, veterinarian, police officer, firefighter, etc.
6. Right Effort • Conquer of evil thoughts, lead towards good thoughts • Combination of act and thought • Must have good will towards others • Best must be achieved • Example: always work hard and do everything to the best of your ability, even if you fail.
7. Right Mindfulness • 4 foundations of mindfulness • Contemplation of the body, feeling, the state of mind and the phenomenon • Recognition of what is important • Full attention given to proper thoughts, words and deeds • Example: have priorities in life, do not be influenced by others, have morals that you will stick to.
8. The Right Concentration • Focus on one thought or object at a time • Deep concentration leads to peace of mind and tranquility • Meditation will lead to enlightenment • Example: focus on what is important at the moment. Don't get sidetracked from your goals by small things
What are the Three Refuges? • Triple Jewel” • Refuge: a place of safety from danger • Guides followers along right path on their journey of life These Three Jewels Include: • The Buddha (the guide) • The Dharma (the path) • The Sangha (the companions and the teachers)
