  2. journey: a long trip • courage: to be brave • musket: type of gun • trail: path • quilt: squares of cloth sewn together • chop: to cut • forest: ecosystem with trees, woods

  3. journey: a long trip Christopher Columbus began a long journey across the ocean to the New World.

  4. courage: to be brave • The new student had the courage to introduce herself to the class .

  5. musket: type of gun • The pioneer shot his musket towards the coyote.

  6. trail: path • The horses followed the path, or trail ,to nearby water.

  7. quilt: squares of cloth sewn together • The seamstress sewed each patch together, creating a quilt.

  8. chop: to cut • Each winter people chop wood to build • fires to warm their homes.

  9. forest: ecosystem with trees, woods • The deer sought shelter in the forest near the oak trees.

  10. SYNONYMS: Synonyms are words that have ALMOST the same meaning. Such as tiny and small. When asking students to locate synonyms, the question usually has the words “ANOTHER WORD FOR”. • Another word for big is: ________ • When writing, a thesaurus is a great resource for exploring possible synonyms.

  11. Activity: You have a card. On the card it will state: “I have ________. Another word for _________ is ? The person with the correct response will stand up and read their card and ask for someone with the correct response to stand.

  12. Let’s try! I have path. Who has another word for_______? EXAMPLE: I have trip. Who has another word for courage? I have courage. Who has another word for_______? And so on.

  13. PRACTICE • Now that we have discussed the meaning of each word and a possible synonym for each, it is time to use our new word knowledge to complete the given sentences. • Use CONTEXT CLUES. Who can explain CONTEXT CLUES to the class? Do you think these clues are important? Explain.
