An Epic Saga In FIVE Parts Creative Writing I
Good vs. Evil • Within an epic, there is a battle between what right and wrong; good and bad; light and dark; etc. – there is no middle ground when it comes to the hero and the villain • You need to establish these divergent forces by deciding on who your hero will be and who/what the evil force is (select someone from our time) • Next, you need to detail their strengths and weaknesses. Epic heroes tend to have AT LEAST one nearly superhuman trait ethically or physically
The Plotline • Stage 1: Details the villain • Establishes the location in need • Must establish the threat imposed by the villain • Stage 2: Call to action • Defines who the hero is • How are they drawn into the fray • Stage 3: Into the thick • Going into battle • Starting the fight • Stage 4: Results of the Battle • The hero often has fate on their side and a mighty weapon • There must be a point of ultimate danger to them prior to winning • Stage 5: Return to Glory • Often the hero takes a token of his win or a scar to carry with him • The hero is rewarded for his win
The Structure • Epic poems are STILL written in poetic form • Typically, the author determines which form to follow. You may choose one of the following: • Ottava Rima: ABABABCC • Strambotto: ABABCCDD • Rhyme Royal: ABABBCC • Onegin: ABABCCDDEFFEGG • AT LEAST one stanza must contain a speech *****YOU CANNOT MIX FORMS!!!*****
Drafting & Editing • After following your outline and crafting the stanzas, you must make sure of a number of things… • That the story, as a whole, makes sense • That the story flows through each phase detailed • That there are 10+ stanzas used • That rhymes are NOT forced!!!! REWORD THEM! • That there is at least one speech by a character YOU MAY PARTNER UP TO REVIEW AND FIX
