Financial Education Campaign for CU Leagues April 2013
Background • Initiative of AACUL State Foundation Strategic Initiatives Planning Task Force • Pilot campaign took place April 2012 (Financial Literacy Month) to build awareness of state foundations and test messages and methods for reaching out to credit union employees and members. • National CU Foundation (NCUF) and the Texas CU Foundation laid the groundwork for the campaign
Purpose • To raise awareness of credit unions’ financial education activities and importance of financial education • Raise funds for the National CU Foundation and state CU foundations in support of their financial education initiatives
Basic Standards for CUs to Participate Credit unions participating in this campaign would have to commit to either (or both) of the following activities to fundraise among staff and members: • holding a “Financially Fit Day” on 4/3/13 • fundraising throughout the month of April
Financially Fit Day Campaign kick-off will be “Financially Fit Day” on Wednesday, April 3rd. It will be a jeans or casual day for credit union staff, whereas staff will pay to participate and raise money and awareness for financial education. The idea is that there is one dedicated day for credit unions and their members to become Financially Fit! Credit union staff are highly encouraged to ask members to support financial education with a monetary contribution.
Fundraising in April Throughout April, credit unions can become financially fit by participating in various FUNdraisingactivities, such as: • Jeans/Casual/Flip Flop Day • Bake/Hot Dog/Popcorn Sale • Dunking Booth • Purchase Time Off • Donate a Buck • More ideas are listed in campaign toolkit at financialeducation.coop Credit union staff are highly encouraged to ask members to support financial education with a monetary contribution.
Optional Pledge CU Staff & Members: Pledge to make a difference in your financial life and in the lives of others. The pledge will be answering a simple question such as “I pledge to support financial education by _____” with options such as “making a donation to support financial education initiatives, take a financial education class in the next month, educate myself about the importance of budgeting, spread the word about the importance of financial education, make an extra car or mortgage payment this month, spend less on eating out, or etc. ” Pledge Online or in Person
Donations • All donations will be split 50/50 between NCUF and the state CU foundation in which the donation was made. • The donation can be made at the branch which the CU will collect and send to NCUF, or the pledger can donate online at the custom website created for this project, financialeducation.coop.
Key Players • NCUF – develop and coordinate campaign materials, outreach and fundraising. Collect donations and pledges. • Leagues/Foundations– promote campaign to member credit unions to get as many as possible to participate in the campaign. • Credit Unions – market the campaign to staff. Internal contests are encouraged to raise donations and number of pledges. Send pledges and donations to NCUF.
