  4. Aims & Objectives • Teach life saving skills in schools • Instruct 11 year old children year BLS • Early commencement of ‘chain of survival’ • Increase the chances of individuals surviving a heart attack

  5. Background • In NI heart disease kills 1 in 3 men. • Less than 1% of the population know BLS • 70 - 75% at home

  6. The ABC for Life Programme • Set up 2004 • Official charity status ‘ABC for life association’ in 2008 • 450 schools enrolled to date • Training ongoing • Resources / training provided to schools free of charge • Equipment stays in schools for future training • Refresher courses provided annually

Research summary • Nationally and internationally published • 11 year olds can acquire theoretical knowledge • Retain skills at least 6 months following training • Theory better in 13 yr olds, no diff in practical skills • Emphasis on ‘life-long’ learning • No difference in teacher vs doctor led training • Reduced anxieties • Increased willingness to help

Care of manikin and materials • Face should be cleaned between each user • Lungs should be changed between each session and discarded • Manikins face should be thoroughly cleaned after each session • Manikin should be handled with care • Store in blue bag • Replacement lungs via website www.qub.ac.uk/abcforlife

Changing lungs • Demonstration by medical students • Open chest by removing the ‘skin’ from the sides • Remove manikins face • Remove bottom of lungs from attachment • Pull mouth piece off by dislodging the jaw • Remove and dispose of lungs • Attach new lungs to the jawbone and reinsert • Fix lung to bottom of attachment • Replace ‘skin’ and check lungs are inflating
