  8. Module AssessmentA summary of each module and its assessment pattern is given below. This gives the breakdown of assessment methods contributing to each module together with the weighting of each.

  9. Week 1-2 Lab/Maths/Physics All students will undertake some study of mathematics at level 1 and will need to achieve a pass in the tests, which form part of modules PHY-10022/10024/10020/10021/10023. These modules each contain a unit of mathematics. These mathematics components contribute 20% to each of the modules BUT you must achieve a pass in each to pass that module. Introduction to the Lab – Friday (4/10/13) 10:00 – 11:00 in LJ 1.75 Introduction to Maths – Friday (4/10/13) 11:00 – 13:00 in LJ 0.26 First Physics Lecture – Monday (7/10/13) – 13:00 – 14:00 in HUX 0.15 First Maths Lecture – Friday (7/10/13) – 10:00 – 11:00 in HUX 0.15

  10. Problem classes (Monday/Friday 15:00 – 17:00) All students will attend one of the two scheduled problems classes per week. During this session you will be working on problems set by module tutors. Note once again that your attendance at problem class will be monitored and marks will be awarded towards final module assessment. All the assignments for problem classes need to be completed in your problem class ring folder. If you need to change the group, please discuss the change with the staff running the problem classes/maths tutorials. Problem Class Group Problem class will start on Monday (14/10/13) for Group A and Friday (11/10/13) for Group B. Details of the groups will be in your problem class ring folder.

  11. Laboratory Class (Thursday 14:00 – 17:00) Introduction to Laboratory Class – Friday (4/10/13) 10:00 – 11:00 in LJ 1.75 First lab session (Lecture on error and Data Analysis) – Thursday (10/10/13) 14:00 – 15:00 in CBA 0.061 First lab session (Worksheet on error and Data Analysis) – Thursday (10/10/13) 15:00 – 17:00 in LJ0.26 (Faculty Computing Lab) Experiment on (B) simple Harmonic Motion / Data Analysis and Processing 10/10/13 – 24/10/13 Experiments A and C - M Maths test 2-3pm Maths test 2-3pm Lab 3-5pm Lab 3-5pm Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Week 9 Week 10 Week 11 Week 12 Report #1 Deadline 4.00 PM 22/11/13

  12. Semester Week Issued Week Work Submitted Week Work Returned Autumn 3 5 6 6 8 9 9 11 12 Spring 3 5 6 6 8 8 9 11 12 Problems Sheets The lecturer will hand out the problems sheets and the completed solutions should be returned to the problems boxes in the corridor near the laboratories. You MUST submit an Assessed Coursework Submission (ACS) form with each piece of work for assessment. The sheets will be marked and returned the following week. These marks will contribute to your module mark. Problem sheets will be handed out and deadlines set according to the following table: This is a guide only, problem sheets and dates may vary dependant on the module Tutor.

  13. SUBMISSION DEADLINES • All problem sheets must be submitted by the deadline. This is to enable lecturers to give rapid feedback and model answers for the problem sheets. • No marks will be awarded for problem sheets • submitted after the published deadline. • This applies to all problem sheets on all modules, but does not apply to lab reports.

  14. Laboratory Assessment For your laboratory work you will need a hard-backed laboratory notebook. This is normally be kept in the laboratory and marked following each practical session. You will also be required to submit laboratory reports according to the following schedule: Report 1 Week 8 (Autumn Semester) Report 2 Week 1 (Spring Semester) Report 3 Week 6 (Spring Semester) Report 4 Week 9 (Spring Semester) You will be given full instructions on the use of laboratory notebooks and the writing of laboratory reports by the tutor responsible for your practical class.

  15. Extensions for the laboratory reports It is important that you endeavour to meet published deadlines for submission of assessed coursework. If you submit work after the relevant deadline, without good cause, your mark for such work will be penalised according the scheme outlined at the foot of the ACS form. Only your Year Tutor or, exceptionally, the Programme Leader has the authority to grant individual extensions for coursework submission.

  16. Progress Interviews The level 1 tutor will undertake your progress interview during the following times: Individual Progress Interview 1 AUTUMN Semester, Weeks 4-5 Individual Progress Interview 2 SPRING Semester, Weeks 4-5.
