The Marine Branch of Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute (UHI) conducts research and monitoring on marine processes, oceanography, chemical pollution, and marine forecasting. They work in three laboratories focusing on marine hydrometeorology, marine chemistry, and coastal zones. They also analyze and generalize data on marine environment quality for state ecological monitoring.

Before 1971 – Basin Hydrometeorological Observatory of the Black and Azov seas (BHMO BAS); • 1971 – BHMO BAS was reorganized into the Laboratory of Southern Seas of State Oceanographical Institute (SOI, head institute is in Moscow); • 1972 – renamed into the Sevastopol Branch of SOI; • 1992 – reorganized into the Marine Branch of Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute (UHI, head institute is in Kiev), belonging to State Hydrometeorological Service (SHMS) of Ukraine; • 2001 – UHI with its MB and whole SHMS were incorporated into the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine; • 2005 – UHI and SHMS were transposed under authority of Ministry on emergency situations of Ukraine (MES); • 2006 – Double subordination of UHI (MES and NAS of Ukraine) was established by the Government order.
1944 1954 Building is situated in the historical centre of Sevastopol since 1939 2003
Activity of MB UHI is concentrated on following main directions: • (i) climatology of marine processes within the Azov-Black sea basin; • (ii) oceanography and chemical pollution of coastal zones; • (iii) processes in riverine estuaries and deltas; • (iv) development and application of marine forecasting methods and marine hydrometeorological observations and service technologies. 3 laboratories execute these works: • Laboratory of Marine Hydrometeorology; • Laboratory of Marine Chemistry; • Laboratory of Coastal Zone and River Mouths; The institution is the methodological and analytical centre of marine network of Ukrainian hydrometeorological service. Besides, it is responsible for the state ecological monitoring data analysis and generalization on marine environment quality (including water, bottom sediments and near-surface air pollution).
State Hydrometeorological Service of Ukraine:36 points of routine observations on the Black and the Azov sea coasts, in straits and marine mouths of rivers • 22 marine stations (full meteorology and hydrology) • 19 marine posts (5 – belong to stations) • 27 sea level gauges (16 – with level recorders) • 21 point of visual wave observations • 23 marine stations detect water salinity
Marine water quality routine monitoring is executed by 8 chemical laboratories of SHMS marine network and MB UHMI
