  2. What is Geography? • Geography is the study of: • People • Environment • Available Resources • Why do we study Geography?

  3. 5 Themes of Geography • Location • Place • Human-Environment Interaction • Movement • Region

  4. Location • Where a place is on the surface of the Earth • Latitude • Longitude • What is relative location? How does relative location affect cultures?

  5. Place • Physical Features • Landforms, Bodies of Water, Climate • Human Characteristics • Where people live, religious beliefs, language • How do Physical Features affect Human Characteristics?

  6. Human-Environmental Interaction • People shape and are shaped by their environment • What does this mean? • How do you interact with your environment? Why is that important?

  7. Movement • How does the movement of people, goods, and ideas reshape civilization? • Does this still exist today? Where?

  8. Region • This is how the world is divided • Examples: North v. South Arabic-speaking v. Muslim World - Can you name another example?

  9. How Do We Know All of This? • Prehistory: Period before people invented writing • What we know can be broken down into three subjects: • Anthropology • Archaeology • History

  10. Anthropology • Over 200 years old • Anthropology: The study of the origins and development of people and their societies • Specialized Field • Culture: The way of life of society • What does culture mean to you?

  11. Archaeology • Specialized Branch of Anthropology • Focus on past people and cultures • Artifact: Objects made by human beings • Tools, Weapons, Pottery, Clothing • What can we learn from artifacts?

  12. Historians • Study how people lived in the past. • Questions by Historians: • How accurate are records? • Who was writing the records? • By investigating events, historians can answer questions about the past. • Why are historians important?

  14. Role of Technology • Archaeologists use modern technology to understand the past. • How do you think technology has changed when it comes to weapons. • How important are maps in all 3 fields?
