  3. The objective is the harmonious development of physical ability of the horse, resulting in a calm, supple, flexible animal . . . The horse should be confident and in perfect understanding of his rider: free, light, and beautiful to the observer. The horse should submit himself happily and proudly to the will of the rider, without any disturbance. . . With careful training, the horse willingly, on command and with grace, accommodates the rider. The result is a tribute to the rider’s ability and the horse’s generosity. www.worlddressage.com Parelli

  4. “How can we sincerely pray to be an instrument in His hands if the instrument seeks to do the instructing? As the Lord communicates with the submissive, fewer decibels are required and more knowledge is received.” (Elder Neal A Maxwell, “Willing to Submit” Conference April 1985)

  5. PRINCIPLES OF JOY • Surrender your will to God’s will • (Elder Boyd K. Packer, “The Mediator,” Ensign, May 1977, 54)

  7. I will do ANYTHING you ask, as long as it fits here… I will have as many kids as you want as long as it is not more than 4. I will date anyone you want me to as long as it’s the person I am dating right now When I am graduated, 24, have a job, then you can give me revelation on marriage. I will be obedient, as long as… I will serve in any calling except . . .

  8. Boxing in the Lord with Expectations… • “If the Prophet is true, when I go to the Conference Center, I will immediately feel an overwhelming confirmation that he is the prophet when he walks in the room, because my dad told me that on his mission the prophet visited the MTC and when he walked in the room, he immediately felt a confirmation.” • “If I am supposed to know the church is true, then I will know because ________ will happen.” • “If the Book of Mormon really is true, I will know because _________ will happen.”

  9. Boxing the Lord in with Prayer “Please don’t tell me the answer is _________. I already know that. I need a different answer.” • “Lord, my team needs to win this. Can you just please help us win?” • “Heavenly Father, I need an answer by Monday.”

  10. “Sometimes we inadvertently seek to tell the Lord how he should conduct his business. We may feel a particular urgency about a question and press the Lord for an answer by a certain deadline - or we may strongly desire a particular kind of manifestation - and be satisfied with nothing less. We may try to tell the Lord what answer we would like. “But these are not ours. All aspects of the revelation are determined by the Lord.”“Elder Gerald Lund, The Voice of the Lord,” BYU Devotional, December 2, 1997

  11. PRINCIPLES OF JOY • Surrender your will to God’s will • Don’t box in the Lord • (Elder Boyd K. Packer, “The Mediator,” Ensign, May 1977, 54)

  17. Step 1: Get into the college you’ve always wanted right out of high school and with scholarships. Step 2: Serve a full mission to your dream mission/come home just in time to start school Step 3: Date a lot/have a great social life/live in the best apartment complex with the best ward with perfect roommates Step 4: Pick the “right” major the first time/never switch majors/never take unnecessary classes/never wander around wondering what you are going to do with your life Step 5: Have the perfect dating experience/never get your heart broken/ figure out early on that he/she is the “right” one your senior year so that you don’t have to be “poor college students” the first year of marriage Step 6: Get engaged in Spring, marry in Summer (because who wants to get married in the winter?) Step 7: Quickly become successful in your ideal job/have enough money for a down payment on a home Step 8: Buy a beautiful home on a great street in a charming neighborhood to start out your life together Result? The perfect start to a perfect life.

  18. If becoming a surgeon has always been “the plan,” will you consider promptings about other career paths? • If you have expectations on how a date should go, and it goes the exact opposite, will you be able to hear the Lord tell you to give that person another try? • If you are sure that you will only have a good experience on your mission if you go to a foreign country, will you be able to accept inspired counsel when you get called stateside? • If a death or tragedy “was not supposed to happen to our family,” will you be able to feel the Lord’s comfort or reassurance? Why would God want to interrupt your life? Is it OK to have goals/dreams?

  19. GOALS VS HOPES • A true goal does not interfere with someone else’s agency. • Go on five dates next month. • Get a 3.5 GPA • Get 1,000 followers on Instagram. • Baptize two people this year. • Be married by age 25. • Marry a cute boy/girl. • Be president of Fort Night in five years. Write down 5 goals…

  22. “Have your frantic needs ever slammed the door shut on revelation? The scriptures teach: ‘Knock and it shall be opened.’ Knock does not mean hammering and kicking the door like a maniac. Like the drowning man who can't be helped because he clutches and grabs, perhaps our frantic cries deafen us to God’s voice. Perhaps our own passion temporarily destroys our capacity [to receive revelation]. We must have the capacity to receive, or even our all-powerful God can’t help.”

  23. “Suppose that you could see yourself thousands and millions of years after you have proved faithful during the few short years in this time, and have obtained eternal salvation and a crown of glory in the presence of God; then look back upon your lives here, and see the losses, crosses, disappointments, and sorrows, you would exclaim, "But what of all that? Those things were but for a moment, and we are now here!” (as quoted by Neal A. Maxwell, Lord, Increase our Faith, 52 President Brigham Young
