What is the author’s purpose? What evidence from the text leads you to this? 2. What conclusion is the reader most likely to draw about Shakespeare based on paragraph 2? What evidence from the text supports this conclusion? • 3rd read= Write a paragraph explaining what you think it would be like to grow up like Shakespeare did. Use specific evidence form the text to support your writing.

What two pieces of evidence from the text support the conclusion that Shakespeare was “lucky?” • 3rd read=Put yourself in the shoes of an actor during Shakespeare’s time. What is your opinion of the job they did? What evidence from the text supports your opinion?

Thursday 2/6/14 Activities Objective Students will… Record important events in chronological order Design graphics relevant to content • Shakespeare Timeline • Using the information from the two readings (“A Look at Shakespeare’s London” and “Getting Acquainted with Shakespeare”) and the A&E Biography information, students will create a timeline illustrating important events from Shakespeare’s lifetime. Color and graphics required.

Hall Passes • As of Monday 2/17/14 everyone has one hall pass for the remainder of the quarter (until 3/13/14) • Passes that are not used count as 20 extra credit points • For Quarter 4, everyone will receive 2 hall passes; unused passes will count as 20 extra credit points. • I am not writing passes today.

  29. Shakespeare’s Sonnets 1. Interpreting the Sonnet 2. Creating a Sonnet Individually or with your group Create a sonnet about a topic of your choice (must be school appropriate) (Shakespeare’s life, chemistry, your novel, etc.) Follow the Sonnet rhyme pattern ababcdcdefefgg • Individually or with a group of up to 4 people • Each group member must explain what ONE “Quatrain” or the “Couplet” means to them • Group members should staple their papers together and turn them in Both assignments are due TODAY; No Exceptions. Any group members not working will complete the assignment alone.

This play opens with three witches making plans to meet Macbeth. What kind of play do you expect after such an opening scene? 2. The Witches make prophecies to Macbeth and Banquo. How would you react to someone who promised to reveal your own future? • Label Globe Theater • Review drama terms & basic plot elements • Read Act I • Answer comprehension questions

  31. Hall Passes • Reminder: • As of today 2/17/14 everyone has one hall pass for the remainder of the quarter (until 3/13/14) • Passes that are not used count as 20 extra credit points • For Quarter 4, everyone will receive 2 hall passes; unused passes will count as 20 extra credit points.

What kind of play do you expect after such an opening scene? • The Witches make prophecies to Macbeth and Banquo. How would you react to someone who promised to reveal your own future? When you are finished Label the Globe Theater on page 4; Use the parts on page 5. Then complete the terms to know on page 6.

Read and Analyze Act II Use new words in sentences • Journal: Respond to one of the prompts below: 1. Think of a time when you relied on someone who was untrustworthy. How might you feel if a trusted friend turned against you? 2. Who seems more determined to kill Duncan—Macbeth or Lady Macbeth? Why? • Read Act II; Respond to comprehension questions; Complete Act II vocabulary.

  42. Act II: Before You Read Respond to one of the prompts below: • Think of a time when you relied on someone who was untrustworthy. How might you feel if a trusted friend turned against you? • Who seems more determined to kill Duncan—Macbeth or Lady Macbeth? After your journal, complete the vocabulary on page 12 in your pink packet.

  43. Act I: Lady Macbeth’s Plan Steps in the Plan What could go wrong • Greet Duncan and provide a great banquet. He will sleep well after a large meal with drink. • Lady Macbeth will drug Duncan’s two guards by serving them spiked wine. • Macbeth will kill Duncan with the guards’ daggers and place them, smeared with blood, back with the guards. • Macbeth will clean up any evidence against him and go to bed. • The next morning both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will grieve and cry out against those who committed this outrageous act of treason.

  47. Act II: Essay Quiz • Why do you think Macbeth kills the drunken guards after Duncan’s murder? Were these additional murders necessary? Support your answer with evidence from the text. • Who is beginning to suspect Macbeth of Duncan’s murder, and what evidence points to these suspicions?
