Symptoms & high risk factors • When a person is having a stroke, they may become dizzy, have speech problems, experience numbness, weakness, or paralysis on one side of the body, have blurred vision, or a sudden severe headache • Each one of these factors can put you at higher risk of a stroke: • Being over the age of 55 • Having a family history of stroke • High blood pressure • High cholesterol • Smoking • Diabetes
Ischemic strokes & hemorrhagic strokes • Ischemic strokes: • Account for 75% of all strokes • Occurs when a blood clot forms that blocks blood flow to part of the brain • Hemorrhagic strokes: • Less common • Occurs when a blood vessel on the surface of the brain ruptures
Prevention • Much of stroke prevention is based on living a healthy lifestyle • Know and control your blood pressure • Not smoking • Lowering cholesterol, sodium and fat intake • Managing stress
Stroke rehabilitation • Some problems that are caused by stroke may be permanent, but some can be fixed through therapy • Most problems associated with stroke are related to movement and speech, therefore a stroke victim would most likely need to go through speech therapy or physiotherapy
