Findings • With the internet: • Students can complete work quicker • Student work is drawn from more up-to-date and state-of-the-art sources • Students are “stuck” less often • Students manage their time better • Students are more likely to share information • Students consult each other for help more often
Findings • Students Feel: • The Internet usage directed by teachers is “poor”, “uninspiring”, and “not-so-engaging” • Teachers don’t acknowledge that the Internet is a big part of their lives • Students Want: • Courses that teach keyboarding, computer, and Internet literacy skills • Better coordination of their at-home Internet usage and their in-school, directed internet use • More engaging, Internet-utilizing assignments

How Teachers Understand the Internet • Many Schools… • Don’t allow Internet on school grounds • Block or filter software and websites • Don’t teach basic computer/internet skills • Don’t allow internet usage for assignments • 2 Versions of the Internet: Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 • Teachers view the Internet as Web 1.0: • One-way exchange of information • Ex. Britannica (120,000 online articles)
How Students Understand the Internet • Today’s students have grown up with the Internet in it’s “Web 2.0” form • Web 2.0 • Bilateral, Multilateral-Exchange • Ex. Wikipedia (10 million articles) • Result: • We’re creating informational value at an exponential rate • The hierarchal learning process is becoming flattened and replaced with a mutually-beneficial and collaborative learning environment
Why It Matters • We are entering a world of heightened collaboration and participation • Teachers aren’t convinced that their schools are preparing them for the 21st century • Students have more information and more access to information than any previous generation and schools are not utilizing this properly • Web 2.0 services can turn ordinary students into publishers, movie makers, artists, story tellers, etc.
