Proposal for Ridgeway Middle School to convert to a secondary (11-16) school
Current Situation • Ridgeway Middle School (Ridgeway Academy Trust) has delivered Public Examinations for the last three years and has secured good results in these areas compared with national averages. • Ridgeway has secured two consecutive ‘Good’ judgements in recent Ofsted inspections and is consistently above the floor targets set by the DfE.
Objectives of the proposal 1 • To ensure parents have access to a coherent and well-planned education structure at our school with a single age of transfer between all schools in the local community. • To engage in determined collaborative working partnerships between 2 (not 3) phases with a view to enhancing the sharing of specialist provision with our local partner schools.
Objectives of the proposal 2 • To provide and sustain the highest standards of education whilst maintaining the nurturing and well-being of all children. • Provide specialist teaching areas across the curriculum. In conjunction to this our staff will know pupils personally and therefore guide and support the young adults in a nurturing and academic environment
Objectives of the proposal 3 • To ensure sustained progress in all subject areas by offering both consistency and expertise. • To ensure that all of the schools involved in the proposal, work positively as partners to ensure a high quality and localised educational provision. • To ensure that all of the schools involved in the proposal offer children and young people a broad, balanced and cohesive curriculum that meets the needs of all.
Compared to the UK • Ridgeway would be a school where the pupils would stay on site for 5 years. In this time, all of KS3 and KS4 would be delivered (rather than the current split) • This would give continuity of teaching staff, delivery and increase the potential achievement for the pupils • 2 tiered is most common in the UK. All data and information is based on Primary or Secondary schools
Pupil performance • Data stuff here?
Some recent legislation New School Organisation Regulations came into force on 28 January 2014. These regulation mean that Governing Bodies of all categories of mainstream school can make the following changes without a formal process: • • Expansion • • Alteration of upper or lower age limit by up to two years (except for adding or removing a sixth-form)
Some contextual information • In 1983 there were 1400 Middle Schools in the UK (mostly England) • In 2014 there are 171 Middle Schools in the UK (England) • For RMS, each year at the end of Yr6 we loose ¼ of the year group to the two tiered system in Warwickshire. This has been historic and current projections suggest the trend remains.
2013 Key Stage 2 Outcomes [Slideshow Title - edit in Headers & Footers]
RMS data and how well we do This is a good (middle) school (for pupils of secondary age) • Students learn quickly during their time in the school, and students in Key Stage 3 make particularly rapid progress in English and mathematics. • Students’ attainment in English and mathematics is above the levels expected for their age in Year 8. • Students make excellent progress in all subjects in Key Stage 3 Ofsted May 2013
What might a secondary provision look like for Ridgeway? • KS3 (Yr7-9) all National Curriculum subjects taught • KS4 a common 'core' of subjects delivered to all pupils. The core consisting of English, Mathematics, Science, I.C.T. or Computer Studies, Religious Education, Personal and Social Education and Physical Education.
What might a secondary provision look like for Ridgeway? 2 • Pupils choose four 'optional' GCSE subjects. Choices are likely to include Geography, History, Religious Education, French, Music, Drama, Art, Physical Education, Business Studies, Child Care, Textiles, Engineering, Graphics, Resistant Materials and “Triple” Science. • Apart from the options available in school there would be the further option for some pupils to take a range of vocational courses. Ridgeway would work with other providers to facilitate this, as is the norm with secondary schools.
What might a secondary provision look like for Ridgeway? 3 • At this stage, Ridgeway is proposing a 3 form entry secondary. This would make Ridgeway a ‘small’ secondary of 450 pupils in the first instance • Work with other Post 16 providers such as NEW college, and other local secondary schools as no Post 16 offering in proposal • Similar sized schools locally :Campion – Leamington Spa, Queen Elizabeth School – Atherstone, Shipston High School - Shipston on Stour, Carteton – Oxford, Winchcombe – Gloucs, Erasmus Darwin - Staffs
