Communicating online Email, Social Network, School Programs
Places you might communicate online • Email • Instant Message (IM) • Text messages • Blogs • Websites • Games • Social Media – Facebook, Twitter etc • Comment sections of YouTube, News articles • School sites – Destiny Quest, Edmodo, School Blogs
THINK before you communicate • Is it true? • Is it helpful? • Is it inspiring? • Is it needed? • Is it kind?
Not appropriate • Name calling • Mean or hurtful language • Giving away your own or someone else’s private information • Trolling – this is when you say random, mean or rude things to an innocent person online. Usually when you are not even supposed to be part of the discussion • On school sites talking about things unrelated to school or the topic of discussion • Typing in ALL CAPS (this is shouting)
Tips for writing • Think about who will be reading it • Try to be brief and get to the point • Only write what you would say to someone face to face • Be clear about your subject – use a subject line for emails and be direct in text messages or IM
More tips • Use emoticons to help show what you mean - ;) BUT do not use emoticons if you are writing for a “formal” audience • If writing email for a formal reason, be sure to write it like you would a real letter – include all parts of a letter • Take care to check your spelling and capitalization – especially if you are writing for school
Remember the golden rule • Treat others the way you want to be treated !
