Sean Chairde, a voluntary organisation, comprising of a network of older peoples groups in South Kerry was established in November 2004.
Since then it has grown in confidence and developed its own structure with officers, a constitution and charitable status.
Recent Awards In May 2009 Sean Chairde was awarded Overall Winner at the Kerry Community Awards. As winners we are honoured to be chosen for presentation to President Mary McAleese On Friday 13th May in Kerry.
Objectives • Combat loneliness among the elderly living alone especially in remote areas of South Kerry. • Apply for grants and lobby on issues affecting older people. • Encourage groups to create opportunities for active elderly people to participate fully in activities.
Objectives • Develop awareness of the needs of the elderly among friends, neighbours and relatives. • Mobilise support within each community for the care of its own elderly members.

Activities 18th May 2006, Dromhall Hotel, Killarney Subject: Wills/ Inheritance, Finance and Home Security. 150 Senior Citizens attended
Activities 27th September 2007, Dromhall Hotel Killarney Subject: Health Issues, including mental and physical well-being and related health services. Survey carried out to assess the issues and needs of the elderly in South Kerry. 200 Senior Citizens attended.
Activities 16th October 2008, Dromhall Hotel, Killarney Subject: Importance of Mental Stimulation and Keeping Active. Exhibition of Arts & Crafts by members of Sean Chairde Network. Collected and prepared for transport 618 knitted items completed by our network groups to send to charities abroad. 260 Senior Citizens attended.
Activities 8th October 2009, Dromhall Hotel, Killarney Subject: Designed to stress the importance of security and safety for the elderly. Exhibition of Arts & Crafts performed by members of the Sean Chairde Network. 265 Senior citizen members attended.
Activities 7th October 2010, Dromhall Hotel, Killarney Subject: HSE Services for Older People explain the “Fair Deal Scheme” . Minister for Older People Aine Brady speaks on Positive Ageing. 270 Senior Citizen members attend.
Tea Dances Two Tea Dances per month are held on Sunday afternoons 2 – 6pm hosted in different community centres throughout South . These dances are very popular with circa 280 attending.
Friendly Bowls In 2008 Sean Chairde decided to set up Sean Chairde Friendly Bowls, indoor bowling had already existed in Kerry, however we wished to extend the areas where bowling would be played to include Killarney, Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Cahirciveen, Ballinskelligs, Dromod and Tousist.

The Future • To continue to develop awareness of the needs of the elderly to the Government and to the Community. • To apply to the Dormant Accounts for funding to enable us to provide social contact for older people at risk from isolation. • Well, we will continue with our Tea Dances, Information Days, Training etc. and encourage all our senior citizens to become active both mentally and physically. • BenefIT Scheme. This scheme is primarily about making people over the age of 55 who don't currently use technologies aware of how they can benefit from them

Formed in 1983 • To promote and develop the area through the provision and enhancement of the Social, Recreational and Economic needs of the people and encourage them to become involved in this work.
Projects to date • Purchased additional ground to extend the sports field in 1983 • Built new Community Centre which opened in 1988 at a cost of €250,000.00. This was funded by the local community, and opened debt free.
Projects to date • Organise and Develop Sporting and Recreational activities in the Community Centre. Bingo, Cards, ceili, Irish dancing, Civil Defence Unit, First Responders, Youth Club, Senior Citizens Club, and indoor games all on a weekly basis. • Village improvement works.- landscaping of amenity areas. • Village walls, footpaths, Village and town land stone signs. • Car parking alongside community centre and church.
