THINKING BIBLICALLY In Light of Today’s Culture
Main Point Current Christianity is filled with confusion concerning what is right and wrong in our culture. Much of the confusion is caused by a failure to believe or a refusal to accept the sufficiency of Scripture. We expect the world to reject the Word, but not the church. Many Christians do not believe the Word is sufficient. However, we propose that the scripture is truly sufficient in EVERYTHING!

BFC – AOF 1 1-1 The Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the inspired, infallible Word of God, a divine revelation, the original writings of which were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit. They are the supreme and final authority of faith and conduct.
BFC – AOF 1 1-2 Inspiration is a special act of the Holy Spirit by which He guided the writers of the Scriptures so that their words would convey the thoughts He wished conveyed, would bear a proper relationship to the thoughts of the other inspired books, and would be kept free from error of fact, doctrine, and judgment.
BFC – AOF 1 1-3 The Holy Scriptures, the written Word of God, are composed of all books of the Old Testament and New Testament

The Authority of Scripture Recognized in the NT “Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? Jesus Christ Claims Scriptural Authority for His Own Words “Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:34–35, ESV)
Inspiration The Miraculous Act of the Holy Spirit
Synopsis The Holy Spirit inspires prophecy and gives knowledge of God, insight and wisdom. Scripture declares itself to have been inspired by God.
The Meaning of Inspiration “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17, ESV) Theopneustos: understood as the air that was physically expelled out of the lungs of God.
Purpose of Inspiration “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,” (Ephesians 1:17, ESV)
Purpose of Scripture Why did God give us His Special Revelation?

To Lead God’s People to Maturity “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17, ESV) Criticism and Censure Impart Knowledge Replace a mistake Cultivating the mind and actions of a disciple
Sufficiency of Scripture Is Scripture really Sufficient for faith and Life?
Synopsis Scripture is presented as being of itself sufficient for faith and for life.
God’s Written Revelation is Sufficient ““And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you.” (Deuteronomy 4:1–2, ESV)
The NT Records the Completion and Fulfillment of the OT “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” (Hebrews 1:1–2, ESV)
Warnings against turning from, or adding to, the Apostolic Gospel “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.” (Revelation 22:18–19, ESV)
Descriptions of Scripture Point to its Sufficiency: Scripture is Good “So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” (Romans 7:12, ESV) “Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,” (1 Timothy 1:8, ESV)
Descriptions of Scripture Point to its Sufficiency: Scripture is Perfect “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;” (Psalm 19:7, ESV)
Descriptions of Scripture Point to its Sufficiency: Scripture is Eternal “Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” (Psalm 119:89, ESV) “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Matthew 5:18, ESV)
