HISTORY OF SHIATSU • Shiatsuoriginates from ancient Chinese/Japanese techniques, Do-In(self massage) and anmo or mo massage (or anma in Japan). “Shi" means finger and "atsu" means pressure in Japanese. • Tokujiro Namikoshi (b 1905 d 2000)Founder • Shizuto Masunaga (1925-1976)Zen Shiatsu Glenn Grossman, L.Ac.

  4. Ki Doin (Leading/Guiding the Ki) • Doin = energy cultivation • Consists of three broad disciplines • Ki exercises similar to forms of yoga, qi gong, • martial arts • meditation. • Ankyo = medical treatment. • Consists of anma (massage) and kyosei (physical manipulation). Glenn Grossman, L.Ac.

  6. Meditation Technique • Meditation and MovementTraining your sense of the flow of qi. The qi, through practice, can follow your intent.. This is why we say, ‘the mind leads the qi.’ • Sit upright in a comfortable chair. Close your eyes. Feet about shoulder width apart, parallel to each other, flat on the floor. • Hands: 1st ten minutes - palms down touching your knees. 2nd ten minutes - palms up with fingers open. • Breathe naturally letting your shoulders and arms relax.   10. Pressure Points • 8 Gates LI 4, LV 3 (used together are called the 4 gates) SP 6 and LI 11 (all four points used together are called the 8 gates) • 4 Avenues • LI4 – Heat • LU 7 – Chest • ST 36 – Abdomen • UB 40 - Legs Glenn Grossman, L.Ac.

Treatment of Health Problems • Headache – points selected for different types of Headache. • Frontal - LI4, ST 44, GB20, • Parietal - LR3, DU (GV) 20 • Temporal - Taiyang, SJ5 • Lumbar pain • UB 17, UB 18, UB 23, UB 52, UB 40, UB 60, GB 34, GB 30, K3 • Neck/Shoulder pain • SJ 5, SJ 14, Luo Zhen, UB 10, LI15, ST38, GB 34, GB 20, GB 21 Glenn Grossman, L.Ac.

Endangerment and Contraindications • Contraindications – avoid areas of broken skin, suspected tumor, or broken bones, major blood vessels, also LI4 SP6 and abdominal points and points in the back near the fetus in pregnancy • Endangerments – kidneys, stomach and spleen, eyes, Anterior or posterior triangle of the neck, Axillary region, Femoral Triangle, Popliteal fossa.
