Romans 3:10–11 (ESV) as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. … John 6:44, 37 (ESV) No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.
John 8:43–45 (ESV) Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Cf. Matthew 13:11-17
Interpretive issues regarding election: • Individual or corporate for those in Christ? • The nature of spiritual deadness. • The order of salvation – especially regeneration and faith.
All should be able to affirm: • Salvation is of the Lord – no one may boast. • All who truly desire salvation in Christ Jesus will be saved. • The Church is called to take the gospel to all. • You don’t have to have all the details of God’s ways figured out in order to be saved.
1 Corinthians 3:6–7 (ESV) I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
1 Corinthians 2:1–5 (ESV) And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
Implications & Applications: • Respond to the Lord opening your heart. Romans 10:17 (ESV) So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. • Results in love and good deeds.
