Metric system is a system of measurement based on ten • This is the basic measurement system of the world with the exceptions being the U.S., Liberia, and Myanmar

Discussion Questions • Can you think of ways that the U.S. already uses the metric system? • What are the benefits of switching to the metric system? • What are the drawbacks of switching?
Why Decimal? • Powerful argument for the metric system
Metric Basics • Base units of measurements • Examples: • Length = meter • Weight = gram • Volume = liter • Temperature = degree Celsius
Base units are multiplied or divided by factors of 10 to represent bigger or smaller units of measurement Giga (G) = billion mega (M)= million kilo (k)= thousand Base Unit centi (c) = hundredth milli (m) = thousandth
Tips • Unit symbols are case-sensitive – mm is different from Mm • Don't have singular and plural forms — it's 1 mL, 2 mL (no “s” at the end) • Not abbreviations - No period after unit symbols
Sample references • A US cent weighs exactly 2.5 g, while the nickel weighs exactly 5 g
