How do languages come and go? • Language divergence is when a language splits into 2 or more, caused by a breakdown in spatial interaction. • Latin breaking into Spanish and Protuguese. • Language convergence is when languages combine, through increased spatial interaction. • Afrikaans in South Africa was a combo of Dutch, German & French. • Language extinction occurs when there are no more speakers, either due to death or abandonment, like Latin. • Revived languages are languages that come back from endangerment or extinction., like Hebrew was for Israel. • In Great Britain, Gaelic, Welsh and other Celtic languages are actively being preserved.

How does business affect languages? • Languages change with trade so people can make money, especially with globalization today. • A lingua franca is a language used between groups of different languages so as to do business. • English is the lingua franca of the world today. Swahili is the lingua franca of Africa. • A pidgin language is a simplified combination of languages. • A creole language is a pidgin language that is more complex and becomes the native language of a group of people.
How does politics affect languages? • Large empires like the Roman in Europe and Han in China use their language in gov’t which leads to their language dominating. • Invention of printing press led to standardization of languages. • A standard language is the chosen dialect that is widely taught and used in the media and print. • Nation-states used printing book in theirown language to promote unity. • Some countries declare an official language, usually to provide unity in an area of language diversity.
What are issues with multilingual countries? • U.S. has had an English Only movement. • Belgium is divided between Flemish and French speakers, which splits it politically. • Canada’s Quebec province almost split from the rest of Canada to protect French language. • The Basque people in the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain and France want to form own country to protect Basque language. • Switzerland has four official languages and has been peaceful.
