February 19, 2015 State Board of Education Meeting Update: • The State Board of Education (SBOE) approved three mathematics high school courses. • The State Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.20 LIST OF STATE-FUNDED K-8 SUBJECTS AND 9-12 COURSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING NINTH GRADE IN 2008 AND SUBSEQUENT YEARS has been amended and posted for 30 days of public review and comment. • The SBOE adopted two Cybersecurity Pathway Courses. • The SBOE approved amendments for Rule 160-4-3-.13 YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS.
February 19, 2015 State Board of Education Meeting Update: • The SBOE voted to rename the Georgia Performance Standards to Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). • The current implementation of CCGPS in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics will continue until the end of this school year 2014-2015. • The recently revised and SBOE approved ELA and mathematics standards for implementation beginning for the 2015-2016 school year will be called the ELA and Mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). All coding for standards and related instructional resources will be updated with the new GSE for use beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. For example, ELACC3RF3 will be changed to ELAGSE3RF3. • All GPS and related documents in other content areas will also be renamed to reflect the GSE as revisions occur.
Computer Science Task Force Timeline • February 19, 2015 – Include specific language with designated courses in the SBOE Rule (160-4-2-.20) for the list of State-Funded courses as meeting foreign language, or fourth mathematics, or fourth science requirements • 2015-2016 School Year – Students will be able to count designated Computer Science courses as foreign language, or fourth mathematics, or fourth science core credit in meeting high school graduation requirements. Check admission requirements for USG or TCSG. (See slide 7 for proposed/designated Computer Science courses.) • 2016-2017 School Year – New Computer Science Pathway course options will be developed; An additional AP Computer Science Principles course will be available for the 2016-17 school year.
DRAFT Computer Science Course Options See below for proposed courses included in Draft Rule for 2015-2016 to count as fourth science, or fourth math, or foreign language: • Advanced Placement Computer Science A (already meets fourth science requirement) • *International Baccalaureate Computer Science, Year One • *International Baccalaureate Computer Science, Year Two • Computer Science Principles • Programming, Games, Apps and Society * IB schools must satisfy IB requirements that may differ from this state option.
Early Intervention Program (EIP) The 2015-2016 Early Intervention Program (EIP) Guidance and Rubrics are being reviewed for updates and will be posted by March 1, 2015, from the Curriculum and Instruction Home page via the EIP link under “Other Programs”. Foundations of Algebra CourseELIGIBILITY GUIDANCE Step I: Middle school administrators/teachers will identify students who Did Not Meet expectations on the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade CRCT. These are students who may have significant gaps in their mathematics achievement. Step II: Middle schools will administer Individual Knowledge Assessment of Number (IKAN) diagnostic to students identified in Step I (No costs will be incurred by the state or districts.) Step III: During the scheduling process, high schools will enroll students scoring at IKAN Stage 5 (equivalent to 4th grade mathematics) or below in Foundations of Algebra.

Definitions (d) Fitness assessment program – annual assessment measuring and reporting health related fitness in the areas of aerobic capacity, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Requirements (b) Each school containing any grade K-5 shall provide a minimum of 90 contact hours of instruction at each grade level K-5 in health and physical education. Power Up for 30 The program empowers teachers and staff to incorporate more physical activity into the school day using innovative strategies. The training sessions will guide training teams from the elementary schools on how to maximize the use of facilities and personnel before, during, and after school to integrate physical activity.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) • The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. • Recipients of the award receive the following: • A certificate signed by the President of the United States. • A paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. • A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. • To nominate a talented secondary science teachers (7-12) to participate in this year’s program, please visit the PAEMST website.
