Unicorn and translation An overview of solutions
Introduction • Why such a topic • The Benelux Sirsi Users group
Issues • The look : gui’s, screens, etc… • Diacritics • BRS and searching • Thesaurus management • Documentation
In Spanish I-Bistrohttp://www.urjc.es/z_files/ac_biblio/ac03_biblio.html
Where do things come from? • Headings (gateway + elements) • icons • messages and labels files • form translation • indexes • help pages • notices, paragraphs, • etc….
Some remarks • Flexibility versus Complexity • Some more practical information please
Diacritics • ASCII : Alt+0225 e • html : é • etc…..
Processes diacritics go through • Example : mails
Some remarks • Check the compatibility between Unix and PC • Use a good and efficient Emulator
BRS and searching • Some titles: • 178183 • La distribution de l'eau, une exception française qui a engendré deux leaders mondiaux • 178172 • L'eau wallonne en 5 axes
Truncation issues • Left, right : what so ever…. • Example : • buurtwegen • boswegen • =$wegen
Some remarks • More attention at the start • Checklist at the planning level
Thesaurus issues : some practical examples of how it has been handled • The World health organization • the Council of Europe • inforum (legal belgian database) • the ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles)
The world health organizationhttp://www.who.int/library/database/index.fr.shtmlA simple search under type cross-reference
The Coucil of Europehttp://lms.coe.int/uhtbin/cgisirsi/Fri+Aug+23+12:07:40+MET+DST+2002/0/49
The ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles) • Bilingual subjects • Automatic translation program for the future : starting from english subjects, a report will automatically allocate french subjects
The ULB • What the ULB will achieve
Some remarks (1) • Why isn’t the logic of the terrific language system for the screens also possible for the subjects?
Some remark (2) • The system causes no problem for unilingual users or libraries with unilingual material, well for librarians of a library that serves people speaking several languages or having material in several languages: all of them use some kind of translating system, going from papertools to automatic translation
Some remarks (3) • All english is a solution that tackles perhaps 90% of the problems, not all of them, especially in the legal and cultural area, where some concepts are not translated at all
Some remarks (4) • Even in the public libraries, bilingualism will increase, along with the emergence of regional approaches (see the Spanish example)
