HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT UAEU A federal institution established in 1976 by Federal Law number “4”, based on an initiative of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahayan, late President of the UAE; First university in the UAE; Free education, transportation, and accommodation for undergraduate students; Started in Fall 1977 with 4 colleges (Arts, Science, Education, and Business and Economics); Other colleges established later: Shari’ah and Law 1978; Food and Agriculture 1980; Engineering 1980; Medicine and Health Sciences 1986; University General Requirements Unit (UGRU) 1994; and Information Technology 2000. In 2007, the College of Sharia and Law was replaced by the College of Law and the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies. First masters program offered by College of Sciences in 1991 in Environmental Sciences. First Ph.D. program at a federal university started Fall 2009

UAEU UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS • UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS UNIT (UGRU) • All new students are placed into an appropriate level of the UGRU program. • Students take courses in English, Arabic, Math and IT. Upon demonstration of competency in these areas they leave UGRU and move to one of the academic colleges. • COLLEGES • The academic programs in each of the colleges have three major requirements: 1. General Education requirements 2. College requirements 3.   12. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES - TEACHING • All faculty members with teaching responsibilities are expected to be effective teachers commensurate with their rank and experience. They are to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the academic programs to which they have been assigned. • All faculty are expected to create and maintain an educational environment that facilitates and supports student learning. Faculty are expected to: • Develop course syllabi • Design lectures, tutorials or labs with care • Coordinate their instruction and assessment with others, so that students experience an integrated, cohesive program of study. • Classroom pedagogy should reflect best professional practices and the utilization of appropriate technology to enhance teaching and learning. Faculty are responsible for:

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES - TEACHING • The assessment of each student’s academic work by assigning grades that reflect individual student progress • The use of grading standards and evaluations to ensure that students have achieved learning outcomes at a level commensurate with the University’s high academic standards • Faculty (excluding the College of Medicine and Health Sciences) should expect workload assignments each semester as follows: • University General Requirements Unit (UGRU) instructors: 18 hours weekly or equivalent service. • University non-faculty instructors: 18 hours. • University faculty: 12 credit hours of teaching or equivalent service. • Faculty are required to schedule and post at least four office hours weekly (two hours for each campus, male and female). UGRU instructors must give time for office hours and committee service as set by the UGRU Dean and approved by the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.

  14. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES – RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP • All faculty members having the rank of assistant professor, associate professor and professor are expected to develop and maintain a program of scholarship that is appropriate to their appointment, discipline and area of specialization.

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES – SERVICE • All faculty members are expected to contribute to the service mission of the University in a manner appropriate to their rank, length of service and discipline. The service mission includes activities both internal and external to the University. • External service is an extension of the knowledge and skills of the faculty, which are made available to various institutions. • Internal service includes student advising and mentoring and various activities related to University governance.

UAEU FACULTY CONTRACTS • Contracts for new full-time faculty at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor or professor are for four years with a two year probationary period. • When the faculty member is confirmed in his/her position at the end of the probationary period, the remaining part of the contract is in effect. • The contact for an assistant professor can be renewed for a period of up to four years. An assistant professor must be promoted in order to be eligible for further contract renewals. • Contracts for associate professors and professors can be renewed for periods up to four years. • Contracts for instructors are normally one, two or three years. The contract can be renewed based on favorable recommendation after the performance evaluation. • Visiting faculty are normally appointed for a minimum period of one semester or a maximum period of one academic year.

UAEU FACULTY EVALUATION • All UAEU faculty members are to have their performance evaluated annually by the appropriate personnel in their academic department and college. • Prior to evaluation, the chair requests the faculty member to submit a summary portfolio to the department chair addressing his/her performance in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service for that year. • The chair evaluates the faculty performance in each of the three areas of competency based on the submitted portfolio and any other documents available to the chair, in addition to the chair's knowledge of the faculty member's performance throughout the year. • The faculty performance is judged as excellent, good, satisfactory, or unsatisfactory for each of the three areas as well as overall performance and collegiality. The chair also provides comments consistent with the performance ratings assigned.

UAEU FACULTY EVALUATION • Student Evaluation of Teaching • Students are required to evaluate every course they take using an on-line evaluation form • Results of this evaluation are made available to the faculty member and to the department head and dean • Peer Evaluation of Teaching(PET) • This is an evaluation of a faculty member’s teaching conducted through classroom visits by a college committee. • It is normally done during the first year of service for a new faculty member and for those applying for promotion.

FACULTY PROMOTION • The United Arab Emirates University has established appropriate standards and criteria for promotion in rank and a comprehensive process for the review of applications for promotion. • The Policies and Procedures governing promotion at UAEU are presented at the following web site: http://wwww.uaeu.ac.ae/bylaw/pdf/PRC_04070701_EN.PDF • An applicant for promotion must prepare three portfolios: one each for teaching, scholarship and service. The portfolios will constitute the bulk of the evidence in support of a faculty member’s application for promotion. External evaluations of the candidate’s scholarship through letters from peers provide additional evidence of the quality of scholarship. Peer Evaluation in Teaching provides additional evidence of the quality of teaching.
