Clear Lake Connection Our Mission - To Promote Administrative Excellence by HonoringEncouragingLeadingPromoting November/December2011 2011 Executive of the Year On October 17, 2011 , the IAAP Clear Lake NASA Area Chapter celebrated their annual Executive of the Year Event and 25th Chapter Anniversary Celebration. The event was a huge success with an over the top attendance! In honor of Boss’s Day, CLNAC Members were encouraged to nominate their Executives based on those who have shown visionary leadership in their field over the last year and have made significant contributions to the community. The award recognizes executives whose lives exemplify commitment to the ideals upon which the Clear Lake NASA Area Chapter was founded. With an overwhelming response, the “Executive of the Year” Nominees consisted of the following five finalist: Mike Culver, Director of Olefins and Aromatics at LyondellBasell nominated by Rachael Venable, CAP; Bernard Godley, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the UT Medical Branch in Galveston nominated by Irene Dillon, CAP-OM; J. Keith Johnson, Harris CapRock Communications, Global Energy Services President nominated by Frances Jackson, CAP-OM; Rich Oller, League City Acting City Manager and Assistant City Manager of Public Works nominated by Billie Hall, CAP; and Scott Hartwig, Vice President of Mission Operations and Program Manager for Integrated Mission Operations Contract nominated by Ymelda Calvillo, CAP-OM. Congratulations to our 2011 Executive of the Year, Scott Hartwig, Vice President of Mission Operations and Program Manager for Integrated Mission Operations Contract (IMOC) for United Space Alliance on his leadership and support to IAAP-CLNAC. Thank you Ymelda for making the nomination.

2. 2011 Executive of the Year Finalists Mike Culver, Director of Olefins and Aromatics at LyondellBasell was nominated by Rachael Venable, CAP. She says, “Mike supported me in my cause to further my education and career by joining IAAP. Through his communications with our HR department, he has successfully encouraged them to embrace administrative assistants with the CAP/CPS designation. There was only one CPS (1976) holder with LyondellBasell prior to my joining. (His support) sets a new avenue for administrators with LYB to gain the CAP designation and achieve the many new goals and knowledge IAAP provides its members. Irene Dillon, CAP-OM chose Bernard Godley, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the UT Medical Branch in Galveston because he excels in every area of executive leadership. He leads by example, is patient, productive, a visionary and achiever. He is a well-educated man that communicates well with all. He is distinguished, yet personable. He balances the attributes of an executive exceptionally. Frances Jackson, CAP-OM says Mr. Keith Johnson, Harris CapRock Communications, Global Energy Services President fulfils the attributes in the Executive of the Year Award Program by modeling their corporate PACT culture of belief yielding behaviors yielding performance. This culture is defined by Passion, Accountability, Courage, and Transparency or PACT. He actively exhibits, as well as teaches these modules in our offices around the world. Billie Hall, CAP nominated Mr. Rich Oller because she feels he has shown by example IAAP’s core values. Though Mr. Oller was new to the government sector, he dove in ‘head first’. What he did not know, he did not rest until he understood what was needed. After a year and a half as Legue City’s Assistant City Manager of Public Works, Mr. Oller “stepped in” to fill the role as Acting City Manager, as well as his role of Assistant City Manager of Public Works. He supports certifications such as those offered by IAAP.

3. Clear Lake Conversation by Chapter President Lorna DeArmond, CPS October has always been one of my favorite times of the year. Although Houston doesn’t see the dramatic change of season colors, we did finally get some cooler weather. October is the beginning of the fall season and it slowly transitions us into the holiday season. This year was a bit different because it was packed with activities and events for our Chapter. I attended the Fall Professional Education Conference in San Diego, CA from October 8 – 12 and had the opportunity to take the additional Microsoft – Google class a day early. The conference was held at the Sheraton Marina & Resort located on beautiful San Diego Bay. I barely had time to return and land at Hobby Airport before I was quickly running to another event – the CPS/CAP Banquet hosted by Exxon Mobil South. I joined Jeanette Smith, Donna Rodgers and Rachael Venable at Crowne Plaza Post Oak to celebrate their outstanding accomplishment of obtaining IAAP certification. Time continued to move quickly on to our 25th Anniversary and Executive Recognition meeting Monday, October 17. The celebration began with reading letters of congratulations from IAAP President Tamara Goodall, CPS/CAP and Dortha Gray, CPS/CAP Southwest District Representative. Heart-shaped measuring spoons, tokens of appreciation, were set at each table setting. Laura Robinson, CPS President of Brazoria County Chapter presented us with a beautifully engraved crystal gavel. After dinner, Donna Boudreaux, CPS/CAP presented United Space Alliance Vice President, Scott Hartwig with the Executive of the Year Award. And then following that, we learned style tips and techniques of MS Word 2010 presented by Computrain owner and Microsoft Master, Kate Skol. The usually slow pace of October was replaced by a fast flow of events and the busy holiday season is around the corner. This year our chapter will host its Holiday Party at Lakewood Yacht Club on a Friday night, slowing the pace down and no rushing about the next morning, unless you’re going shopping of course!

4. 2011 CAP/CAP-OM Banquet On October 15, 2011 ExxonMobil South hosted the CAP/CAP-OM Banquet at the Post Oak Crowne Plaza for IAAP members who earned their CAP, CAP-OM designation or recertified. Attendees from CLNAC pictured with T-L President-Elect Tina Wiggins were Jeannette Smith, CAP, Donna Rodgers, CAP-OM, Tina Wiggins, CAP-OM, Lorna DeArmond, CAP, and Rachael Venable, CAP-OM. Attendees were recognized with a trophy and several gifts from ExxonMobil for their commitment and dedication to the certification program, offered twice a year by IAAP. Following the award ceremony, Exxon Mobil executive Beth Casteel gave a presentation on communication “Getting the Recognition you Deserve without Gloating”. Beth emphasized the importance of Support Teams and told a short story of when she was running a marathon to support an ailing friend only to find she required the assistance of her friend/trainer to get her through the tough cramps and struggles her body went through early in the run. Without her friend’s support Beth would have never found the determination to stay in the game and never have received the recognition she has found in herself and her friends since. This story helped me realize the ladies of CLNAC have been my Support Team from day one and it is not just with me but they support every individual that walks in the door. These ladies are here to provide the support you need to succeed in all aspects of your life. Thank you CLNAC Members, you really are the BEST! 5. Changes to the IAAP Certification Program Effective November 2011 • One Rating • IAAP has moved from a two rating system to a one rating system, with areas of specialty. The one rating is our Certified Administrative Professional, or CAP. We are also offering specialties, starting with Organizational Management, which will be followed by others in the future. • Effective this week, all active CPS ratings will be changed to CAP, and all active CAP ratings will be changed to CAP with the Organizational Management specialty, CAP-OM. You don't need to do anything to your IAAP record; we will be making the changes automatically. • Active ratings include individuals who have recertified as required every five years. In the case of CPS holders who certified prior to January 1988, your rating is considered active and will be changed. Your certification status has nothing to do with your status as an active member of IAAP. • For candidates who tested in November 2011, any appropriate changes to your records will be made automatically after exam results are available in December. • Recertification • All CAP holders are required to recertify. This is based on the date of your initial rating, or when you last recertified. Passing the Organizational Management exam does not change your recertification date, as this is a specialty exam and not a certification. • These changes do not impact your recertification deadline. Those who previously held a CPS rating will need to recertify five years after they either attained their rating or last recertified. Those who had both the CPS and CAP rating will be expected to recertify five years after they attained or recertified their CAP. • If you have additional questions about recertification, please refer to the Recertification Application. • Proper Usage • Examples of the only proper usage of the CAP rating and Organizational Management specialty are: • Pat Masters, CAP • Susan Jones, CAP-OM • Replacement certificates are available, if you choose to purchase one. The cost is $15 per certificate. CAP plaques are also available. The cost is $40 if mailed to a US address, or $45 if mailed to a Canadian address. For those living outside the U.S. and Canada, add an additional $25 for air mail, or an additional $80 for courier service. • To order a replacement certificate or plaque if you are within the U.S. or Canada, please complete and submit this form with payment. For those outside the U.S. or Canada, please complete and submit this form with payment. Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing for replacement certificates, and 6-8 weeks for plaques. She has been married for 29 years with 5 children , 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She says, “Personally, I’m most proud of my certification. I never believed I could pass the tests, but accomplished it with the help and support of my friends and boss. It is such an achievement”! Karla Villeneuve, CAP-OM is an Administrative Assistant to the Director of Transportation at Standard Parking in Houston. She is currently a member of the Hospitality Committee for the 2012 Texas-Louisiana Division Meeting. She has spent the past seven years married to her best friend, Bob.

The Contest is open to all members in good standing as of the date of the drawing who have completed, submitted and received their MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE confirmation. For 2012, our chapter will pay the conference registration for TWO chapter Members of Excellence to the IAAP EFAM, July 22-25, 2012 in Grapevine, TX. The winners may stay in the chapter room at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center the nights of July 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. Drawing will be held at the April 16 chapter meeting. 10. COMMUNITY SERVICE Canned goods - Don’t forget to bring canned goods to Chapter Meetings through November.  We will collect and deliver all items to local food pantries for those families who need a helping hand.  Contact Donna Rodgers or Rachael Venable if you would like to volunteer for a community service project and visit our webpage for a list of upcoming events. KITWOM (Keep in Touch With Our Military)The Community Service Committee wants to continue tosupport our troops around the world.  So we are planninga postcard writing campaign during June and July.  This will give us the opportunity to thank these dedicated citizens for protecting us and our democratic way of life.  We’ll set up a table at the July meeting with postcards and pens so that members can take time to send greetings.  We will also be collecting items for care packages. Participation is voluntary.  The Community Service Committee will have a box for donations at our July 18 meeting. Box Tops for EducationWe continue to accept Box Tops for Education coupons at our Board and Chapter monthly meetings. This ongoing project is easy, simply collect Box Tops coupons from participating products.  See the participating products webpage for products that offer box tops. You will be amazed! We collected over 1,000 coupons during our first drive, so let’s keep it going and snip those Box Tops for Education!  The Community Service Committee will have a collection box at our monthly meetings.

11. DOOR PRIZES: Help fill our baskets! There is an ample supply of baskets. But we are in need of ITEMS to place in our baskets. 15. IAAP FACT SHEET OBJECTIVE: The Clear Lake-NASA Area Chapter will host the 2012 Texas-Louisiana Division Annual Meeting in League City, Texas in May for 1900 members throughout the two states. The Clear Lake-NASA Area Chapter, through cooperation with its members and the Clear Lake area business community, will provide facilities, services, seminars, and business sessions for continuing professional development and education. FACT: The 2012 Texas-Louisiana Division Annual Meeting will be held May 18-20, 2012 at the South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center. Tours of the various highlights of the Clear Lake community are being planned for those in attendance. INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) is a not-for-profit professional association for office professionals with approximately 28,000 members and affiliates and nearly 600 chapters worldwide. We have been active within the community in furthering the quality of office support for our business leaders. Through San Jacinto Community College, we provide Certified Professional Secretary review courses. The Chapter also supports the Clear Lake community by conducting an annual food drive and annual holiday gift drive for senior citizens, Dress for Success clothing drive annually for women returning to the workforce, and adopting a needy family annually among many other charity events.
