Wetlands • Treated water is sent to Petaluma River or recycled for irrigation
Tertiary Treatment Sand Filtration Ultraviolet Disinfection
Petaluma’s Recycled Water Program • Began 1984 (discharge prohibition May 1 – Oct. 20) • Two types of water: • Secondary • Tertiary
Secondary Recycled Water • Agricultural irrigation • 500 acres irrigated pasture
Secondary Recycled Water • 35 acre vineyard Two 18 hole golf courses
Tertiary Recycled Water – Fire Protection Sand Filtration • Reserve 500,000 gallons in storage for fire protection
Tertiary Recycled Water – Landscape Irrigation • (…and toilet flushing, construction water…)
Summary Use of Recycled Water • Agricultural irrigation = 470 mg/year • Urban irrigation = 260 mg/year • On-site use = 130 mg/year • Total use = 860 mg/year (50% of wastewater treated) • Potable water savings • 390 mg/year • Equivalent to 3,500 homes
Future Use of Recycled Water • High School Fields • Parks
Need for Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility • Increase capacity to 6.7 mgd • Meet increasingly strict regulatory requirements • Improve reliability • Produce tertiary recycled water • Irrigate areas dependent on potable water • Locally controlled water supply
