  2. ¿Qué es? • Progressive in English – “ing” endings • Literally means it is in progress • I am running. (right now) • He was eating. (at that moment in the past) • Progressive is used more in English than Spanish • Spanish present and imperfect tenses can also mean it is/was currently in progress

  3. Revista del verbo estar PresenteImperfecto • Yo estoy estaba • Tú estás estabas • Él, ella Ud. está estaba • Nosotros estamos estábamos • Ellos, ellas, están estaban Uds.

  4. Para Formar • Estar • Conjugated to correct form • Either present or imperfect • Verb stem • Take off –ar,-er or –ir • Attach new ending • -ando for –ar verbs • -iendo for –er & -ir verbs Yoestoyescribiendo. Él estabahablando. This new verbformiscalled a gerundo (gerund).

  5. Too many vowels! • When an –er or –ir verb stem ends in a vowel (leer, creer) use –yendo so there isn’t “-eie-” • Nosotrosestamosleyendo. • Irregular “Ir” • Ir - yendo

  6. Stem changers • Follow preterit stem change rules • Only –ir verbs • Only if they stem-changed in present • Only o-u and e-i changes Dormir – durmiendo Pedir – pidiendo Preferir – prefiriendo

  7. Extras • Negative – no goes before estar • Noestabanjugandobien. • Pronouns (reflexive, etc) – can go before estar or after gerund • Yomeestabareyendo. (separate words) • Ellosestánescondiendose. (attached to make 1 word)

  8. Practica • They are playing. • You were sleeping. • I was eating. • He is laughing. • We were not looking for our shoes. • She is worring too much. (tanto) • They are not taking a bath. • You were going to the park.
