Potato Osmosis and Isotonic Solutions Lab Protocol

This lab aims to determine the isotonic solution for potato cells using various sugar concentrations. Detailed step-by-step instructions are provided on how to design a protocol, collect and analyze data, and graph the information. The data collected includes the initial and final mass of potato cores for different sugar concentrations to calculate the percentage change in mass and determine the trend in osmosis.

  1. Osmosis Diffusion Lab 2 Potato Lab Problem: Which solution is isotonic to the concentration of sugars inside the potato cell?

  2. Design a protocol • Given concentrations 50,75 100, 125, 150 g/L of sugar, how would you use these to find the concentration of the potato cell? What information would you collect? How would you graph the information?

  3. Information to collect Individual data and class data For each concentration of potato cores you will need the following organized into a table • Initial Mass- for each concentration • Final Mass • Mass difference • % Change in Mass To calculate: percent change in mass= (final mass-initial mass)/ initial mass. Then multiply answer by 100 • Class Average for each • Plot data

  4. Graphing Data Explain the data trend that you observe.
