Natural Gas Solutions for School Transportation Systems Natural gas is an efficient and reliable fuel for use in a variety of transportation vehicles for school systems. School districts across America are constantly searching for ways to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations for heavy-duty vehicles, including school buses, shuttle busses and service vehicles while maintaining performance, functionality, safety, and cost competitiveness. A well developed solution is the incorporation of natural gas fueled vehicles (NGVs). NGVs produce lower levels of most exhaust pollutants than gasoline or diesel vehicles. Compared to diesel vehicles, dedicated NGVs reduce exhaust emissions of non-methane organic gases by 89%, carbon monoxide by 70%, nitrogen oxides by 87%, and carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) by 24%. Also, power is not sacrificed with today’s natural gas vehicles. Natural gas has a 117 octane rating that results in higher engine compression ratios, improved engine performance, reduced maintenance, higher reliability, and cleaner air. • Natural Gas Vehicle Benefits for School Transportation Systems • A natural gas school bus displaces 1,400 gallons of diesel fuel annually • Natural gas engines reduce emissions • Carbon monoxide by 70% • Non-methane organic gasses by 87% • Nitrogen oxides by 87% • Greenhouse gases by 24% • Natural gas is up to one-third less expensive than diesel fuel on an equivalent energy basis • 98% percent of natural gas consumed in the United States is domestically produced
Natural Gas Solutions for School Transportation Systems Natural gas is an efficient and reliable fuel for use in a variety of transportation vehicles for school systems. School districts across the nation use natural gas school buses, due to the clean exhaust that's void of the diesel particulates that can be harmful to children. Studies have found that 90 percent less soot is emitted by natural gas buses compared to new diesel counterparts. Though the investment in a natural gas school bus may be higher than that of a diesel bus, lower operating costs will make it an attractive investment. About 20 percent of all new transit buses in the U.S. are now powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). Natural CNG provides a principal strategy for fleets in urban non-attainment areas that must meet emissions requirements. Typically, CNG is stored on a vehicle at between 3,000 to 3,600 pounds-per-square-inch (psi). This requires a central fueling station with a compressor system. Because most school bus fleets return to a central facility after each day, they can be fueled overnight. There are three basic configurations for fueling school buses with natural gas: Quick-Fill systems are used when vehicles must be fueled in a short time period and manner similar to that of liquid fuels. A CNG compressor is used to fill high-pressure storage vessels called a cascade; from there CNG is transferred to the vehicle via a fueling hose. Time-Fillis used when all the vehicles return to a central location. The compressor fills all the vehicles simultaneously via a distributed fueling system overnight. Combination-Fillcan be used when some vehicles return to a central location for time-fill while the balance of the fleet must be quick-filled. This system combines quick-fill and time-fill features. The appropriate CNG fueling station configuration is determined by the fueling characteristics. Natural gas … clean-burning, domestically produced, readily available, well-suited for transportation fleets and heavy-duty vehicles nationwide.
