What for? Purposes: • Ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for employment and independent living. • Ensure that the rights of children with disabilities and parents of such children are protected • Assist states, localities, educational service agencies and Federal agencies to provide for the education of all children with disabilities.
Before IDEA • One in five children with disabilities was educated. • More than 1 million children with disabilities were excluded from the education system. • Another 3.5 million children with disabilities did not receive appropriate services.
Impact of IDEA • Today, 6.5 million children with disabilities are served. • 96% of students with disabilities are now served in regular school buildings. • Services for children birth to three have increased more than 6 fold in the past 25 years.
