  2. Course Description We will use written response, class discussion, and various activities in order to understand and analyze literature as it relates to our lives. We will encounter fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry as we strengthen our reading and writing skills.

  3. Tentative Texts Holt McDougal Literature text: Common Core Edition, 2012 The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang Anthem by Ayn Rand The Contender by Robert Lipsyte Romeo & Juliet by William “Slappy” Shakespeare

  4. Required Materials • 3-ring binder for notes and handouts • Pen (blue or black ink) or pencil • Any assignment completed by due date • An open mind • Independent reading selection

  5. Grading • 40% Projects/Essays/Tests • 20% Classwork/Homework • 20% Quizzes/In-Class Writing • 20% Class Participation/Preparation

  6. Expectations One simple word… RESPECT

  7. Silent Sustained Reading Fridays will be devoted to a full period of reading. Bring in a book of your own or borrow one from the classroom library. At the end of the period you will record the date, SSR selection, and pages read in your SSR log. Full participation in SSR will result in a great test grade for the quarter.

  8. Make-up and Late Work Policy • No late HW will be accepted unless absent or a reasonable extenuating circumstance. • “I forgot” is NOT an extenuating circumstance. • It is your responsibility to make up your work within a week of your return to school. • Late essays and projects will drop a portion of a letter grade each day they are late. • Extra-credit is not an option for making up missing work.
