Biography • October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy • Luigi Goretti and AssuntaCarlino • Third of six children • Baptized in the Church of San Francesco • Confirmed six years later • Father died of malaria when she was 9 • Mother and Maria took on duties • Giovanni Serenelli and son Alessandro worked in the fields with Assunta • First Holy Communion in the church of Conca at the age of 10
A Tragic Ending • June of 1902: Alessandro forced Maria to do chores • He tried to make advance on her but she refused • July 5, 1902: Alessandro grabbed Maria and pulled her into a bedroom • He forced her again but she refused • Stabbed her 14 times in the heart, lungs, intestines
A Tragic Ending • Maria was found by her family • Survived for 20 hours in the hospital • “Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him…and I want him to be with me in Paradise.” • July 6, 1902 Maria died holding a crucifix and medal of Mary • 11 years, 9 months, and 21 days old
Alessandro Serenelli • Released from jail after 27 years • Begged Maria’s mother for forgiveness • Worked in a monastery as a gardener • Became a laybrother of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. • Attended Maria’s canonzation ceremony
Maria’s Ceremonies • Beatification ceremony was on April 27, 1947 • Canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950 • Patron saint of chastity, rape victims, youth, teenage girls, poverty, purity, and forgiveness • Feast day is July 6
Conclusion • Fortitude is the virtue that helps us to face every difficulty or danger with inner peace and suffering • Maria did not hesitate to shed her own blood in order to stay pure • Taught me to be courageous and help my mother out more • Being close to God and Jesus is more important than giving into sin
