  1. III’s ENCORE Old Records, New Records, New Interfaces Cheryl Gowing, University of Miami Libraries ALCTS Catalog Form & Function Interest Group

  2. III’s Encore • *Additional* Catalog interface for displaying search results that begins to leverage the wealth of data in the bibliographic database • Does not replace traditional opac – yet… • Encore search box can be offered anywhere • Library decides how and where to present the traditional opac and Encore • Performs a keyword word against the full bib record

  3. Encore: Key Features • Faceted Browse • RightResult Advanced relevance ranking • Spell check/Did You Mean • Results from enriched content, federated search and link resolvers • Community tagging and integration of ratings and reviews [coming in ver. 2.0]

  4. SpellCheck / Did you mean…

  5. Encore Display • Keyword search results display in center of screen • Uses RightResult relevancy ranking • Brief information w/ links to full record • Lists # of [available] copies • Links to requesting • Links to enriched content

  6. Sort options Serials matching search phrase display first Expand/collapse holdings Link to enriched content

  7. Relvancy Ranking • Algorithm controlled by III • 5 levels/groupings of relevancy based on where search term/phrase is found • Most relevant: search phrase in 245 $a • Highly relevant: search phrase in 245 $b • Very relevant: search phrase elsewhere in record [6xx, 505, 4xx/8xx, etc.] • Relevant: search terms in 245, but not adjacent • Other relevant: terms appear in record, but not adjacent • Titles appear in reverse chronological order within relevancy grouping

  8. Search Results • View expanded holdings without leaving screen • View enriched content [TOC, reviews, summaries, etc.] in window that overlays search result screen • Main search results remain visible underneath enriched content

  9. Faceted Results • Facets offered based on current ‘limiting’ options • Typical facets include: • Field [Subject, Author, Title] • Format • Collection [ie. Scopes] • Publication Date • Language • Location [coming in version 2.0]

  10. Presented by frequency of occurrence • Pulled from Mat Type Fixed Field

  11. Facet breadcrumbs

  12. Tag Clouds • Tag clouds display in the middle right of screen • Used to narrow results – not invoke new search • Pulls subject terms from bib record • Size of font indicates frequency of term use • ‘More’ link opens window overlay on top of search results • Version 2.0 will allow community tagging w/ login • Library supplied tags [i.e. subject terms] will be distinguished from user supplied tags – most likely by color

  13. Expanded Tag Cloud

  14. Featured Titles • Upper right corner can display titles the library wishes to feature from a choice of several algorithms: • ‘Popular Choice’ - based on # of copies or circ data • ‘Recently Added’ – based on cat date • Version 2.0 adjusts algorithm to remove cover images, accommodate long titles, with alternate placement on right panel

  15. Encore & Federated Search • Lower right corner can display results from a search in ResearchPro [III’s federated search product] • Research Pro searches against profiled databases, digital collections, other catalogs, etc. • Encore / Research Pro search will currently only search against the ‘default’ resource grouping – typically a ‘General’ resources group • Results display in real time as they are gathered, but does not interrupt the display of main screen results • Version 2.0 may offer a simple link to display results, rather than hit count by resource

  16. Version 2.0 Enhancements • Location facet • Patron login • Patron alerts • Community tagging • Internationalization • ISBN search • Suppress Request link for non-requestables

  17. Future Development • Harvest from OAI PMH data providers • Other Fed Search product integration • Usage statistics • Integrated User Help • Community Reviews & Ratings • More facets • Context-sensitive linking • Alternate designs • Encore for INN-Reach systems

  18. UM Implementation • Early implementation, but not beta partner • Library supplied logo and links, but no other library configuration necessary or permitted • Server shipped in Fall 2007 • III staff configured Apache server and provided overview training for staff • Didn’t make link public, but conducted focus groups comparing catalog interfaces

  19. UM Implementation • Challenge of how to present the two catalog interfaces to the user • Created a ‘test’ page for quiet launch in Spring semester while configuring federated search [WebFeat] and trying to gather more feedback from faculty • Created Feedback survery to gather reactions to Encore, MultiSearch [fed search], and other search options presented on a tab menu • June ‘08 made tab menu ‘live’ on library home page

  20. UM Encore Home

  21. Implementation Challenges • Concern about confusion over multiple search options • Discussions about integrating Main & Medical catalogs • Exploring WorldCat Local option • Concurrently implementing federated search which included a catalog search

  22. Challenges • Increased dissatisfaction w/ ‘traditional’ opac interface - need a simplified redesign • Not all features in OPAC available in Encore • Bookcart / Save / Export records • Create Saved/Preferred searches • Redirect search to ‘partner’ libraries [Medical & Law] • Continue to exend traditional catalog w/ new services [e.g. Library Thing] ?

  23. Challenges • Lack of control over page/configuration • Tag cloud confused many in focus groups – expected to invoke new search, not refine results • Confusion over LC TOC 856 links and TOC/Summaries/Reviews provided by Syndetics • Decided to mask the LC 856 links, but adds another routine into processing

  24. User Feedback • 3 focus groups • Library student assistants as test group • Two mixed groups of undergrads & grads • One-on-one demonstrations w/ faculty • Feedback survey on all Encore results pages • Limited response via survey

  25. User Feedback • Generally positive – but graduate students & faculty seem somewhat less enthusiastic • No strong branding of catalog • Many felt we should just offer a single interface • Mixed reaction to visual/graphic elements on page - too busy/distracting

  26. Next Steps • Marketing plan for Fall semester • Upgrade III software & implement Encore 2.0 • Provide additional help on ‘About’ page • Conduct usability testing on traditional catalog and Encore to inform redesign on catalog presentation
