Section 3-2 Volcanic Activity(part 1) Iuliana Oloa Jasneth Carreon December 10 2007
How magma reaches earth’s surface • Lava starts as magma in the mantle. • There, magma forms asthenosphere which lies beneath the lithosphere.
In side a volcano • All volcanoes have a pocket of magma beneath the surface and one or more cracks but through which magma forces its way out. • Beneath a volcano, magma collects in a pocket called a magma chamber .
Characteristics of magma • How thick or thin magma is,its temperature, and its silica content are also important facts,
Magma Rises • Liquid magma is less dense than the surrounding solid material, and it flows upward. • Magma rises until it reaches the earth’s surface or until it becomes trapped beneath layers of rock.
A Volcano Erupts • During a volcano eruption, the gases dissolved in magma rush out, carrying the magma with them . • Once magma reaches the surface and becomes lava, the gases bubble out.
Magma Chamber • The pocket beneath a volcano where magma collects.
Pipe • A long tube through which magma moves from the magma chamber to earths surface.
What we learned • On our section we learned most of our vocabulary words what they do and if there formed in different areas of a volcano. • We also learned that looking at our vocabulary pictures helped us know what they looked like and in which part they are in a volcano. • In one of our greens and purples we learned that how magma and lava are the same but do different things, lava starts as magma in the mantle and the magma forms asthenosphere which ,lies beneath the lithosphere.
Lava Flow • The area covered by lava as it pours out of a volcanoes vent.
Crater • A bowl shaped area the forms around a volcanoes central opening.
Silica • A material that is forms oxygen and silicon
Presentation has title, mentions member’s names, and includes a complete date. Topic slides are well thought out, informative, full of details, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the subject. Presentation is very creative, animated, and uses many of the formatting techniques learned in class.
