  2. CLASS OBJECTIVES • To set expectations for your student’s first semester at Auburn • To receive transition guidance to help make your student’s move easier • To learn what resources are available to Auburn parents

  3. SYLLABUS • Class times • Textbooks • Instructor contact information • Schedule • Grade scale • Attendance policy

  5. CHAPTER 1SUMMER TRANSITION • Communication – who will my student call? • Money – how will my student receive funds? • Laundry - who will wash those clothes? • Safety - will my student be safe?

  6. MOVE-IN • Bring a tough skin • Meet other parents • Don’t leave a mess

  7. TUTORING SESSION Blues and Barbecue • August 9 and 13 Fall Family Weekend • September 26-28

  8. CHAPTER 2SETTING EXPECTATIONS • Finances • Grades • Involvement in extra-curricular activities • Progression towards graduation

  9. HOMEWORK • Create a written contract including: • The grades you expect your student to make • The amount you are willing to financially contribute to his/her education • The number of activities your student should participate in • How long you will financially support your student

  10. FIRST WEEK • Welcome Week / Convocation • Stay on campus • No extra guests • Go to class

  11. TRADITIONS • Wear orange and blue. • Watch the eagle fly. • Get a gameday button from the bookstore. • Don’t step on the seal. • Say War Eagle!

  12. MID-TERM POP QUIZ True or False? Parents should talk to their students prior to the beginning of the semester about the grades they expect their students to earn. True or False? Once my student gets to college he will be mostly like to talk about personal and academic issues with his cool new roommate, Elmer. True or False? As a part of the Auburn University Parents’ Association, I am part of the Auburn Family and can attend events for parents like Blues and Barbecue.

  14. CHAPTER 3GETTING ACCLIMATED • Encourage engagement in student organizations • Consider a part-time job • Applaud all opportunities

  15. CHAPTER 4REALITY SETS IN • Transition from grade school to college instruction • Fewer grading opportunities • More competition

  16. IS THIS NORMAL? • Homesickness? • Poor grades? • Lack of friends / Focused only on friends? • Depression / Anxiety?

  17. CHAPTER 5LOOKING AHEAD At the end of the semester: • House rules • Changes in weight • New habits

  18. CHAPTER 6 BEST PRACTICES • Always give your student notice before you visit campus. • Always end every conversation with “Go to Class”. • Always ask open-ended questions. • Always remember the phrase, “How are you going to handle that?”
