DESCRIPTION OF A MYTH • MYTHS ARE PART OF THE SYSTEM OF BELIEFS OF A CULTURE OR COMMUNITY, WHICH CONSIDERS THEM TRUE STORIES. MYTHS TOGETHER WITH LANGUAGES, ART AND RELIGION EXPRESSES THE HUMAN UNIVERSE AND EXPERIENCE. • IT’S A NARRATION OF A SACRED STORY THAT TOOK PLACE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TIMES.
SOME TYPES OF MYTHS • COSMOGONIC MYTHS THEY TRY TO EXPLAIN THE CREATION OF THE WORLD. • THEOGONIC MYTHS THEY TELL THE ORIGINS OF GODS.
TYPES OF MYTHS (CONT.) • ANTHROPOGENIC MYTHS THEY TELL THE APPEARENCE OF HUMAN BEINGS FROM ANY MATERIAL LIVE (ANIMAL) OR INERT (DIRT, MUD). • MORAL MYTHS THEY EXPLAIN THE EXISTANCE OF GOOD AND EVIL.
MAUI MYTH MAUIWAS A MAN WHO PROBABLY EXISTED. HE APPEARED AS AN OCEANIC HERCULES. HE WASMAUI, THE WONDER WORKER WHO CATCHES THE SUN, BRINGS FIRE TO MAN, RAISES ISLANDS FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR. HIS MOTHER WAS HINA, AND HE WAS DIRECT DESCENDANT OF WAKEA, THE FATHER OF ALL LIVING CREATURES. IT WAS SAID THAT MAUI WAS ABANDONED BY HIS MOTHER IN A SEAWEED BOAT BECAUSE HE WAS BORN WEAK.
CREATION OF THE ISLANDS OF HAWAII MAUI WAS TAKEN UNDER THE WAVES AND RAISED BY THE OCEANIC GODS. HE WAS GIVEN WISDOM AND DIVINE POWERS. ONE STORY TELLS THAT MAUI WAS FISHING UP LAND FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR WITH A MAGIC HOOK. BUT HE LOOKED BACK AS THE LAND EMERGED FROM THE SEA AND THE MAGIC WAS BROKEN. THE LAND MASS WAS DIVIDED INTO THE 5 SMALL ISLANDS OF HAWAII.
MYTH OF MAUI AND LA IN THE EARLY TIMES, THE DAYS WERE VERY SHORT AND THE PEOPLE NEVER HAD ENOUGH LIGHT TO COMPLETE THEIR WORK. MAUI WANTED TO HELP HIS MOTHER, BECAUSE SHE NEEDED MORE DAY LIGHT TO FINISH HER WORK. HIS GRANDMOTHER, WHO WAS BLINDED BY THE LIGHT OF LA, «THE SUN GOD», LIVED IN THE BIG CRATER OF A VOLCANO CALLED HALEAKALA (THE HOUSE OF THE SUN). MAUI CLIMBED TO THE HALEAKALA. HE WANTED TO CATCH THE SUN WITH A NET THE NEXT MORNING. HE PRAYED TO THE GOD OF THE OCEAN TO COOL HIM DURING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE SUN.
MYTH OF MAUI AND LA (CONT.) THE NEXT MORNING LA APPEARED ACROSS THE SKY. MAUI´S NET SURROUNDED THE SUN. THE SUN STRUGGLED TO BE FREE BUT HE COULDN´T. IN THE END, MAUI AND THE SUN REACHED A COMPROMISE. THE SUN, AGREED TO MOVE MORE SLOWLY ACROSS THE SKY AND THE DAYS WOULD BE LONGER WITH MORE LIGHT. SO MAUI RELEASED LA FROM HIS NET.
MYTH OF MAUI AND LA (CONT.) THE NIGHT SKY ALSO HAVE THE MARK OF MAUI BECAUSE THE CONSTELLATION SCORPIUS RESEMBLES THE MAGICAL HOOK THAT MAUI USED TO BRING UP LAND FROM THE OCEAN. THERE ARE PROBABLY AS MANY MAUI STORIES AS THERE ARE ISLANDS IN THE OCEAN, BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE ISLAND NAMED FOR HIM, HAWAIIAN´S MAUI.

BUT THANK YOU MAUI FOR CREATING THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
