3. A) The Importance of Rivers Chinese civilization grew up in the river valleys of the Huang He, or Yellow River, and the Yangzi. These rivers provided everything. However, they could sometimes be destructive. Controlling the rivers was a consistent feature of ancient Chinese life.
The need to control China’s rivers contributed to the development of government.

5. B) Other Geographic Features Geography: mountains, deserts, jungles, and oceans isolated Chinese culture more than it did many other early civilizations.
Initially trade was very limited.

7. C) The Impact Having little contact with other cultures, the early Chinese believed that their culture was the center of the Earth, so they called it the Middle Kingdom. This basically meant that they believed their culture was superior and “outsiders” were barbarians.
Therefore, this would be considered ethnocentrism, or the belief in the superiority of one’s culture.
