King David’s Musicians • (1 Chronicles 25:6-7) All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the LORD, with cymbals, lyres and harps, for the ministry at the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the supervision of the king. {7} Along with their relatives--all of them trained and skilled in music for the LORD--they numbered 288. • (1 Chronicles 25:1) David…set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.
Teaching about God every day • (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. {7} Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. • … and when you wash dishes, throw a football, have a tea party, drive to the soccer game, go to their choir concert, talk on the way home from church, eat dinner, and watch a TV show together.
The generations we impactPsalm 78:5-6 • He [God] commanded our forefathers • To teach their children • So the next generation would know them • Even the children yet to be born • And they in turn would tell their children
Your Family Tree – How will you affect those who follow you? • He [God] commanded our forefathers • To teach their children • So the next generation would know them • Even the children yet to be born • And they in turn would tell their children
Spiritual disease in the family treePsalm 78:8 • Stubborn– I’m right! • Rebellious– I don’t care what God says! • Whose hearts were not loyal to God – I cave in under the pressure of world and sin. • Whose spirit’s were not faithful to God – I’m willing to violate my relationship with God.
Israel’s legacy of failure • Ephraim’s character– They were cowardly, jealous, angry and thus excluded from leadership (9-11, 67; Judges 12, 15). • Israel’s attitude– They saw God’s great power, but complained and demanded, so God judged them (12-33). • Israel’s pattern of insincere change– They repented when suffering, but always went back to sin (34-37). • Israel’s forgetfulness and generational sin – They forgot God’s miracles and repeated their parents’ sins (38-64).
Action Steps toward a godly legacy • Start talking with (and listening to) your family – now. • Get alone with God and evaluate. • Make some commitments.
